Expert says reef rezonings cost warnings ignored
An environmental management expert says the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) deliberately ignored his warnings about the cost of reef rezoning.

Dr Daryl McPhee wrote a report in 2003 that conservatively estimated the cost of fishing closures would be about $38 million.

To date, the Federal Government has paid out $56 million in compensation to fishermen and land-based businesses.

Dr McPhee says GBRMPA deliberately ignored his report and massively underestimated the economic and human cost of the rezoning.

"I think they were more interested in their computer models which divides the Great Barrier Reef up into various sections than actually looking at the impacts on families that live in the coastal zone of Queensland," he said.

GBRMPA is yet to respond to Dr McPhee's comments.
