View Full Version : Minor Skeg Repair - Thoughts?

So I had an incident on the weekend, and I am a bit sh%tty too! I was floating around down at Batemans Bay, behind Snapper Island, and we floated down a bit between Snapper and Observation Head. Started the boat and started heading back east. Now I must make it clear, I was not close to Snapper - I was quite a bit away, and thankfully not going fast, when the skeg appears to have struck mother earth!

Lucky, not a lot of damage, so should be an easy fix, but my first questions was WHY is it not marked!! It was not close enough to the island to assume there would be rocks shallow. The sounder was still pinging 8m. So it must be like a pinnacle, and being that far away from the Island, I would not have expected to hit rock. Anyone else experienced this?

ANYWAYS....

So now I need to repair my Skeg. See photo!! I have been doing a bit of reading and given the small size etc, I have seen it repaired with JB Weld, sanded and painted. It's not a large section, but what are your thoughts?

Cheers

Yeah I saw that, but it talks about welding it - as in aluminium welding. I was asking if anyone has experience with the likes of JB Weld products.

Hard i have used jb weld i found it not to be super strong like the americans claim but it does work, i have repaired 2 motor bike crankcases with holes in them one was internal on the wall of the main crank the other one was extrrnal where the chain snapped and bit the crankcase both repairs worked

You'll need to clean the aluminium really well possibly grind it to get the salt off and bring back fresh aluminium than clean it with the appropriate clear i cant remember if its turps or acerone or whatever its one of them

JB weld will work

No glue/epoxy/miracle stuff will fix that properly, it will "patch" it temporarily, best to just get it welded, repaint it and go boating, it's not a big deal.

unfortunately around the batemans bay the locals stay clear of snapper island , its just one of those things local knowledge etc , also around the opposite side near square head i think is a big pinnacle that youve got to watch out for , breaks the surface on a low tide.. the waterways could put a permanent bouy but like many things these days , its just too hard....... set depth alarm to 2mtr around this areas

Thanks man! It's a disaster waiting to happen, as it's not close enough to the actual island to make you think there is an issue. My Sounder did not alarm at all, and was still showing 8m deep, and then out of nowhere we struck it! If it was close to the island I would be OK with it. But given it's that far away, it should be marked for sure. I am lucky it didn't hit the hull!! So I must of just clipped it.

If he jb welds it and cleans the skeg properly it should hold for a long time but if he hits a stick it will likely knock it off

Why do you need to repair the skeg?

it's has done it job in protecting the prop, it still looks capable of doing that again.

My lowrance gps shows the thing you hit

Pays to have a quick look at the required maps your supposed to carry before going out

I wouldn’t fix it unless your going to sell it soon

It’s superficial damage and won’t affect the outboards performance
Hence if going to keep it don’t worry about it unless it really worries the op
If going to sell it fix it depending on the boat it might increase resale

Pretty simple answer

No mate - Wrong island. I was not at the Tollgates. I was behind Snapper. Even this chart doesn't show it!! Remember whatever I hit is only half metre under the water line to strike the skeg!

Navionics shows a lot of detail in sonarchart mode, not sure if this link will work.

That smaller island shows 2 meters deep pretty sure in Sydney a tide swing can be close to 2 meters
