hi guys I'm new here and hoping for some information please
I'm looking at buying 1 of 2 bertram 28 fly bridges.
1st is 1982 with twin volvo 200 installed in 1998 and have done 650 hrs , they are blowing black smoke whilst at cruise speed.

the 2nd boat is a 1988 bertram 28 flybridge has twin steyr 236 in it.they have done 1900 hrs, they are blowing some white smoke at cruise speed.
can any one give me any advise on what they think?

thanks in advance cheers

I've never owned a inboard but black smoke could be worn piston rings and cylinder sleeve out of round or leaking valve stem seals

White smoke i would imagine is water and oil mixing than being burnt in the combustion chamber than spat out the exhaust

I am a tinkerer but i would not mess with inboards its not a back yard job to pull one out for a rebuild u would need the help of a ship yard

brendyn the issues with these observations is that they can be caused by multiple items. You would need to have them checked out by a diesel mechanic and run some test other wise you would be guessing.

If they are not consuming oil then the problems are over fueling for black and under fueling for white.

Go the one with Steyrs. I know the boat. It is a ripper. Not a fan of green deaths!

Get them checked. Black smoke in a diesel could be as simple as over fueling and it just needs a tune, White smoke could just be steam or as mentioned it could be something totally different. Another thing worth doing may be a professional oil analysis. Even though you don't have a baseline to go off it should show any major red flags.

injector pumps as well under over fueling

all diesel repairs are expensive even by boat standards

90% of earthmoving gear I service black smoke usually indicates a clogged air filter or a turbo on the way out! Easy to test, replace filter and stick a boost pressure gauge on the turbo!

Never owned either brand, but I used to help out a mate I fished with that had a Volvo, and he used to say they painted them green to match the colour of the hundred dollar bills leaving your wallet.
