Hi guys,
Just bought an early 2000 and something model US merc. Runs sweet, good even compression of 80psi on both cylinders, nice gear box oil and smooth all through the rev range, and generally very tidy all round.
The old bloke that had it said he pressure washed it and the stickers blasted off the motor, so other than the numbers stamped on the welsh plug, and some numbers that are stamped on some parts, and in the block, there's no other identifying numbers I can find.
I got the approx year model by posting a pic of the cowl on a FB page and many people confirmed that it's around late 90s to early 2000s year range. Nitro marine confirmed the approx year model range via number on the welsh plug.
It was sold to me as a 9.9hp but on my 3m flat bottom stacer skimma, it clocked at 40km/hr via gps at WOT. This seemed a lot faster than I was expecting or is that about right? Very happy with the speed and power, but how, if at all, can I find out exactly what HP and possibly narrow down to what year model it is.
stamped on the welch plug is the following:

Appreciate any input cheers :)

I posted on a few FB pages and someone said there old man who has sold Mercury motors all his life, absolutely without a doubt, going off the welch plug number alone, that it's a 96 model 9.9hp...

edit: ill sort out some pics on the pc later tonight
