Upstream or Downstream

Hi all,

Pretty new to boating here. When on the river whats the best way to tell if i am going upstream or downstream? For example today i was on the Hawksbury river heading from Windsor to Wisemans Ferry. I imagine because the ocean is in that direction im going downstream?

Is it as simple as checking the map before i go to a new river to see which direction leads to the ocean?

Yep, check the map and know your tide times if in a tidal area as sometimes upstream is down current and yes, towards the ocean is referred to as downstream - regardless of any tidal influence.
