Well the boat turns ten no real issues until today after i tired to move the tilt and trim as i do every few weeks when not using it. 10 year old ETec 90 Hp E90DSLSUA 05/2007. You can see the oil leakinghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170106/48b0ff7682a8a7766044cf95d781caa6.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170106/48b0ff7682a8a7766044cf95d781caa6.jpg

If you are handy with the spanners and get your hands on a manual you can do it yourself. The only things you are likely to need that the average home mechanic may not have is a butane torch, a slide hammer and the pin wrench to remove the top cap. I bought one a long while ago to do the same job on an omc rude. The only really "hard" part was getting the top pin out but heat fixed that.

correct me if im wrong but thats a seal thats leaked? which is normal for rubber in the environment its in and a cheaper fix then the tilt n trim completely shitn itself..id say not to bad and costly for a 10yo motor..

Yep 10 years in a hostile environment ...doesnt look too bad a problem...these things do wear in and then out over time...

It's gone well this is the first major issue that I can think of. Very happy Galforce owner. I think this was my first post back on Ausfish in five years

Looking at the photo (on a decent size screen now) it looks like the shaft on the trim and tilt is a bit rust pitted. These pits not only allow oil through as they pass the seals but also destroy the seal over time. New piston rod, inner and outer "O" rings and scraper seal plus some time and a quota of swear words and you are good to go assuming there are no other nasties internally.

Yep that's what I thought. I guess that's what happens when you work too much and don't take the boat out fishing. The boat felt ignored and wanted some attention :)

Do you store the engine in the tilted up position? This can be a cause. In the down position the rod is in the tilt trim fluid and is protected. Also not a bad idea after use to tilt it up and give a quick spray with Lanox then tilt down as low as possible for storage.

I just wiped down the ram with a rag and some of the leaking fluid. No pitting it was just some gunk for some ants

If you research it all the way you might be better off looking for a complete secondhand one.

When you factor in your time sorting out part numbers & doing the job, cost of parts & delivery, special tools, down time & unforeseen problems compared to buying a complete unit local & doing a quick & easy swap.

I've read on the forums here there are blown up etecs everywhere so secondhand PTTs should be cheap as chips.
Or you could live with it, keep it topped up with oil & try not to leave it in a highly pressurised state like driven all the way down hard.

If you find one nick in that rod that will catch your fingernail or the smallest of pits it will need to be replaced and its a whole lot easier to replace the rod and cap complete than muck around with seals

I wanted to report the good news it just needed new seals. I budgeted over $1000 for a replacement but end up costing not much at all. I also got a very nice surprise about the trailer thinking I needed a new one but the rust is not that bad at all I have been told and it's still in very good nick. It was all just surface issues :) hopefully you will see me out and about once again after a few years away from the bay.

Thank you everyone
