i was looking for a small Boston Whaler 15 ft to buy ,none for sale here so looked at the cost of importing one from ole USA,a$10,000 (aud) boat and trailer landed in Brisbane is going to cost about $8500(aud) to get it here ,even get charged gst on the freight to the port ,plus any other things that you paid for - all lumped in towards the cost of the boat eg a compression test $100 (usd) incurs a gst of $13 .
is their some trick iam missing here or these days its just not worth it .

wow, thats some cost!
I have been looking at importing into Thailand and I was looking at $4000 for a $25,000 boat.
Seems excessive. Supposed to have a free trade agreement, ha.

Have you looked in Canada. The Aud and CDN $ is not too different cf to the US $
Freight still cost much the same probably but there is not the 25% dollar difference

There are quite a few for sale in Canada at the moment too

Cheers

expensive you bet, everyone along the way wants a slice of the cake i guess and not much cheaper without a trailer, cleaning ,clingwrap, handling , fumigation etc etc .they have this thing about cleaning but mate's mustang import ashtray had butts in it and the inside was far from clean , go figure.
Chimo great idea i will have a look.

Free trade agreement only removes the 5% customs duty possibly payable..

There are alot of fee's and charges involved in this process, packing, freight to Australia, handling and delivery in Australia, inspection and cleaning (if required) etc..

Gst of 10% will be payable on all of the above plus you will be billed 10% import GST on your customs entry..

The main reason why it has slowed somewhat is as mentioned above the dollar is not on parity as it was a few years back and therefore the exchange rate is the main reason why it is a less viable alternative these days..

There is about a 3 cent difference between the Au$ and the Cdn $ so not as bad as the USD$.
Freight is probably similar so for boats not available in Aus like the 15 ft in question esp as there are some old inexpensive but still good ones in Canada it's worth at least doing the sums IMHO.

PS There are some on Craig's list and found this too

not that many in Canada ,found one near Toronto ,asked the shipper which port they use -Vancouver - 3 days drive away.i cant get link to work Chimo, most of the cheaper boats have old motors on them that would want to be replaced with a four stroke anyway,so with winter coming i hopefully might have a bigger choice to pick from as they dont use them for months , as well as the exchange rate getting better by the day.
