Hi All

Need some info.

Daughter's friend from USA coming over to Kiwiland and would like to do some fly fishing. I'm guessing trout.

He'd be backpacking. He'd like to know some places where he can go and catch some fish.

Any help with places, licenses required, etc.

Thanks
Ivan

Licences from here

http://www.fishandgame.org.nz/

They will also give him a small book that will suggest some places to try in each region.

If he is keen, this book is well worth a read. There is also a North Island version.

What are his travel plans, which island?

Bremic, Thanks for the info, not sure of his plans. Typically it's a question of "I want to fly fish in NZ, when and where?". Coming from the USA, he may not be real familiar with NZ geography. Mmmmm, I'm not real good at it either.

Fly fished NZ north island few times, all with great results.
Mainly based at Turangi for Tongariro River, always recommended.

Easy access to neigbouring rivers and the big late Taupo.

If he is interested in hiring a guide, can recommend couple, were lucky to made some great friends in the past.
All depends on budget, he can go all the way up to helicopter fishing.

I have been living over here the last few years. I guess it depends how much time he has, as to where he can go and what he can do.

PROS suggestion isn't a bad one. I would suggest South Island though, less people, better scenery etc. Probably less trout than the Tongariro region though.

Is he wanting to backpack/hike and fish?

Really, there are trout pretty much everywhere, except the top of the North Island. Depending on his time limit, he would be best off working out where he wants to go and what he wants to see, and work out the fishing from there. Unless he is coming for the fishing first and foremost,

The regulation book is available to download from my link above if he wants to do a bit if reading. The John Kent book in the second link is or at least was available from the Brisbane library, and this is a very good read.
