I know you've said plate, but what about a 5.6m Bonito? You'd build one well under your budget!

What about the formosa 550 or 580 CC Tomahawk? http://www.formosamarineboats.com.au/models_centre-console-tomahawk.php

Go fibreglass. So much better. Bonito or yanky import like a Grady white or Boston whaler would
be my choice.

With that budget mate, I'm sure you should be close to a custom build. Give a few builders a call, and they should be able to give you ball parks of what you want.

Cheers

Have a look at the AMM Sea Class, I am in line for a 7m CC, but my mate just picked up his 4.9 CC and it is a very impressive boat.

Contact Gerard at Hammerhead boats. (Hammerheadboats@gmail.com).

Pretty sure you'll be able to get something new otherwise he might know of someone looking to trade up.

How about this one. Just out of budget but if you can stretch, brand new with 45hrs. He has been fitting it out slowly over a year and has only been fishing it over Christmas.

After considering a range of options, I ordered a Seajay 5.6 Predaking. It's being constructed right now.

Thats a shame, you could have one of these for around $30k depending on fit out, and of course you have to build it yourself...

Not too sure home building anything under about 5.5m is really worth while, there is dozens of boats to choose from in that range, from mass produced to custom, and prices are pretty close to what you pay for a kit and gear/consumables to build one.

I get 3-4 calls a week about kitsets for home builders, particularly because people know I used to do a lot of work with Plate Alloy Australia. My advice is always the same. If you've always wanted to build a boat do it. If you're doing it to save money keep shopping. If you are going to do it, ring John at Plate Alloy and if possible do their boat building course. There is an old truism, "by the time you've finished building your first boat, you're ready to build you first boat" Attending a course like the one at Plate Alloy lets you learn all the tricks on someone else's boat.
