View Full Version : Tails up - 7.5m Center cab by Moda custom boats

G'day everyone,

I spent a long time looking for a boat for my needs, i was after a center cab, with twins, big fuel tanks, bait station and a tower. I looked at all the top builders, both in wa and qld. I hadn't heard of moda custom boats until I saw a build thread on this site with special k - the 8m express and my interest grew.

I got in contact with shane at moda, he had a great attitide and was more then willing to have a go at what I was trying to acheive. This is my 5th boat and I wanted to build a boat that could cater for a number of applications. I mainly go marlin fishing, but also do overnighters chasing reefies and trips to the islands as well as booze cruises with family and freinds on board!

There a quite a few things I wanted, flush mounted dash, lockable cabin, pump manifolds, refigeration and freezers, tackle station, plent of space in the center cab, and to have a decent ride.

Everything with shane was so easy to discuss and as soon as I made any suggestions he came up with a plan and got it done!

I took delivery a few days ago and I am stoked with everything, the trailers very well built and tows so nice, the boat had come out flawless and is a real head turner!

It is 10x more stable then my last boat, a 24ft sailfish american mono, I still cannot beleive how a hull with 22 degrees of deadrise can be so stable, even with 2 up in the tower it dosen't even come close to feeling tippy.

The ride is the best I have been in for an ally boat of its size, it really blew me away. It feels so safe with a following sea with a swell rolling, it tracks straight and never ever felt like it was not in control. Side on is also awesome! Like any trailer boat a big head sea is a challenge, but it was pretty nasty coming out of the seaway in the goldy a couple of days ago and we could still acheive planning speed without too much fuss.

With 175 lean burn suzukis I get to 42 knots flat out spinning 6200 with half fuel and 2 pob. I would love to see how the next size up props run! Cruise speed between pretty much 20 - 30 knots is 1L per km! This suprises me so much, my last boat with a 300 yammy used about 1.5l per km! The boat will plane on one 175 and I can troll at 8 knots using about 12l on one motor or 20l combined. Im just going to troll with one, less fuel and half the hours - win win!

I would recomend shane and his boys to anyone looking at getting a top quality aluminium boat built, they are truely impressive!

I would also like to thank garmin, there gear is incredible and i cant wait to get to use mine to its full potential! Im running 2x 7412, 2x 7407 on the tower, autopilot, gsd 26, cm599lhw 3kw tranny and a ss175h 1kw.

It is EXTREMELY fortunate that there was a box of tissues close by when I opened your post, cause I just blew my load all over the room!!
Awesome boat!! That exact configuration is very close to what I've dreamed up for myself and I would definitely get Moda to build it. Congratulations and keep the pics, reports and updates coming!

Hi Luke,

Great looking boat mate! How much fuel and fresh water does she hold? And what does she weigh on the trailer with the tanks full?

Thanks.

How many bananas did the whole rig set you back if you care to share? Even a ballbark figure would be good :)

Exactly 1 million bananas.

The real question is how much is a banana worth? Ball park figure between 1c and $1 Id say.

Whats the big hassle with a bloke asking for a ballpark figure? It could be done by PM. He wasn't asking for financial statements, simply a ballpark figure perhaps to see if HE could afford such a rig. I guess he could go down to the builder, have the builder spend half a day doing up a quote then realise he was dreaming, having wasted the builders time which in the custom boat industry would cost him good money.

All in my humble opinion of course

Nice boat by the way mate. I am thinking down the lines of a big platey in a few years to get under 3.5t and one of these will be on my short list.

Nothing wrong with asking a approximate price in my opinion. Unless the ball and chain is also on the forum

I would guess $142,500. 00

Thanks for the positive comments guys!

I made it back to darwin without too many problems yesterday! There are some rough roads on the treck and the trailer handled it all with very little fuss!

As far as price goes, well it all depends on what accessories you fit, you have to rember mine has a huge list, the tower with duel controls, double the electronics, twin motors, bait station, 4 batterys, duel pumps and common manifold, tuna tubes front and rear, 19 lees bar pin holders, taco grand slam 380 riggers etc etc, you could get a very basic version with a gal trailer, single motor with very basic electronics and no tower / baitstation for around 150k on the water id imagine. Mine was much more then that.

Cheers

Beautiful boat Luke and thanks for sharing including the " ball park figure"🤑
Some on here are a little precious to costs etc of their build but ball park figures are a great indication of what it takes to get something in life you want.

Thanks again for sharing.

Hey mate.
As I said, great boat.
Also I have also always wonders why the price of things is so tabo.
Any way, I really don't mind,
I think is more important to be fishing, compared to what are fishing from...

That is a really really nice boat.

It certainly isn't hard to burn big cash on the options available these days, we are lucky to have the gear around that we do.

Just so easy to keep ticking boxes on the options list 😀
