Thought I might share my build with those who are interested.
I'm building a sea strike 16 by Mark Bowdidge marine design.
I'm pretty impressed with the specs on this boat and am looking forward to a few Sunday's building and having a few beers at the same time.
It's plywood & fibreglass composite, and it exceeds level floatation.
Will make a nice addition to the boat library :)

Thinking that one of their boats might be a good job to keep me busy when i pull the pin from work.

Have you got any experience working with fibreglass before starting this project?

Nice choice Al. I recently built the Edge Tracker 426 and it is a great little boat.
Moonlighter, I had no previous experience with glassing before I started and ended up with a pretty good result.

Yep, followed your thread and saw what a great boat you produced, a real credit to you and the designers. Must arrange to have a look at it sometime if thats OK.

Plenty of experience working with wood but none with fibreglass. I have a mate who lives up the road and used to build big fibreglass boats on the Goldy (i.e. not chop strand moulds). I may lean on him otherwise Mark Bowdidge (the designer) and the technical dude from APL (West system supplier) have already been extremely helpful with their knowledge. :)

No probs mate, Will you be going to the M&G in September?

Would love to but, no.

I fish with the PBA club, we go up in October, and im also going up in a week's time as well.

So 3 x 1770 trips in a year would be pushing my luck with the Admiral!

Might have to try to catch up some other time.

Just a quick update.
Hull is mostly together with just the shear planks to install and then glue.
Otherwise all panels are glued and stitches removed. Also mostly sanded in prep for fibreglassing.

How many actual work hours have you put in so far to get it to this point? I would love to build a tropic 14 at some stage and then move on to something bigger!

Well the boat build stopped for about a year and a half whilst I found and did new hobbies. Picked up the sander and spray gun recently and am now ready to flip it over to work on the inside. See you in another two year lol

Looks good mate the Sea Strike is suppose to be a really nice riding boat unfortunately i never got there as i was building one too but got banned from the group

have u recently asked mark for advice? wondering if he still carry's on like a total .... wit with all that swearing over the phone

one time i seen the pro tournament 21 footer centre console out at Botany Bay in Sydney in 100+kph winds we had just came in and there were our car and old mates with the PT21 only two cars in the car park says a lot lol, the PT21 smashed thru the 1-1.4m chop like no tomorrow

gotta say mark has some good designs but he needs to change his attitude if he hasn't already

Hey Gaz I've never had a problem with Mark he's been excellent to deal with and full of knowledge. If he says something you don't agree with accept his opinion and move on making your own. Impressive about the PT21 can't wait to get the Seastrike in the water one day.

Will u be going with any of the additional modifications that were later updates? from memory u could move the center walk thru to one side or u could build in the whole transom there were other modifications i just cant remember right now

i started my build probably 4-5 years ago and the problem with mark were u had to use his approved products as the last word was his weather u got your builders plate or not because than u needed a builders plate or u cannot register the boat, but times have changed now there is a legal way around it but at what cost financially i'm not sure i just didn't like the thought of spending thousands of dollars on one mans word

yes mark was very helpful on the knowledge i picked up a bunch of great tips and tricks i have to give him that, without me attempting to build from scratch i wouldn't have known where to start on my current build i now have some knowledge from the experience

looks good mate some hard work gone on their. The satisfaction of owner build must be rewarding, im curious though and this is merely because ive notice a few lads building boats here, what kind of savings in dollars can you expect in building one vs buying one of the shelf. no details needed , just a guestimate in percentage would be ideal. keep up the good work .

Hey Catshark the designer's website says a saving 2/3 on a new boat but it's really hard to know.

Hey Catshark the designer's website says a saving 2/3 on a new boat but it's really hard to know.

2/3rds of what exactly? I really like all the misleading advertisement we are bombarded with in the modern world. I can get a 445 replica hull for around $15,000 fitted out. But what boat is it a direct competitor to? How much does it end up costing? Was an interesting thread till you asked the question

Whatever Andy you sound like no one can please you.
The project for me is about an accomplishment with a reward at the end. Already have a great boat and don't really need another.
Unless you have something good to say keep it to yourself.

I just had a look at the BMD web site its not the best now the previous layout was much better Mark actually had build list for his models in which u could see what materials were needed

it went like

8 sheets of 6mm plywood
10 sheets of 12mm plywood
48 litres o resin

etc... this list u could calculate a rough price on which the hulls were going to cost it has all been removed now tho

Hey Gaz, it took me a while to work the new website out as well.
If you click on the photos through the web page it does take you there.

https://bowdidgemarinedesigns.com/sea-strike-16-construction/

I think the $3500k is a little light on, in my opinion it's more like $5k but I did use West System Epoxy and up sized the fuel tank so thats likely the difference. The real cost is the motor, hydraulic steering, Bimini, electronics and trailer.
We'll see but I'd like to go the 90HP Yamaha it's around $13 to 15k a 70HP would also do at around $10k, I have the sounder/gps already and will likely build the trailer for around 2.5k. All up it will be between $25 to 30k. Providing I don't stuff up too much along the way. The good thing is you can buy things when the money comes available and it's an enjoyable project.
