Hi all,I have installed new submersible trailer lights and one of the tail lights is not working.Indicator and brake light is fine.My 7 pin plug has a led test which is identifying no tail light.Is the problem at the socket on the ute or down the wiring?I have soldered the joints and checked them.Also if i have to replace the wire through the trailer chassis is there any tricks other than taping the new wire to the old and pulling through?

Thanks

First up, check the trailer plug to make sure you haven't caught the insulation under the terminal screw or the wire for that side has pulled out. It won't be the ute or both tail lights wouldn't work. Do you have clearance lamps on the guards. If you do there is a good chance that there is a join for the clearance lamp which may be your issue - there was with my Redco. You have probably nicely waterproofed your join at the light already. Unfortunately the only real way to test if it is the wire or your new light fitting (stuff can be faulty straight out of the box) is with a multimeter at that join if the plug is ok. Doesn't really make a difference whether the light is faulty or you are going to rewire the join will have to be opened up anyway.

If you are replacing lights, run new cable anyway, minimize any joins if at all possible, shouldn't be too difficult to test for power at the light to eliminate a faulty light, then work back to the car!

Wiring of Trailer and Caravan Plugs - How To

Caravan/Trailer Wiring ;

The following is the Standard for wiring for trailer and caravans. ; ; Some older plugs are still around and don't always comply with this standard, Important to check that the Car and Carava/Trailers are wired Correctly. Correct wiring is not only for comatability of other vehicles towing but also as a safety measure.

One very important fact to remember is that it is the WHITE wire is ALWAYS the earth in trailer wiring not the green or black wires.

Something does not gel you say one light is working but the other is not yet the test indicator says that none of the lights should be working.
My first thought is that you have a problem where the cables from each set of lights are joined together
Check your wireing colours and pin numbers. it may be that the pin in the socket may need spreading slightly ( Use a fine tipped screwdriver or the tip of a knife).
do you have seperate cables coming from each light all the way to the plug with the wires commoned in the screw terminals in the plug or are they joined somewhere else..
Try taking the brown wire off the centr4e terminal in the plug and connecting it to terminal 1 ( Remove the yellow wire) and turn on your left indicator and see if both tail lights flash that bwill prove the wiring and the lights..

Check the vehicles fuses.....my ute has a separate fuse for each tail light, brake light and indicator.
