Ok, so over the past three years whilst on my 'L' plates as a new boat owner I have some minor scratches with the jettys even with fenders attached.
Does anyone have some advise about how best to remove these, if at all possible
Cheers,
Mat

I should add a search and the recent forum on magicezy does suggest it may do the trick. In hindsight maybe I could have posted in that thread :(
In any case just after opionions as the pic appear of still show a subtle line, would these minor scuffs be easier to fix with that product

Hi skifals, I have the same problem with my aluminium boat the paintwork has some minor scratches on it . I use a product called " colour magic " by turtle wax. It is a coloured polish that hides the scratches, you can also get the same product that comes with a little pen that fills deeper scratches with coloured wax . I'm not sure how it would work on fibreglass but it appears to only be a non cutting type wax polish. It won't completely hide the marks but it does a reasonable job on car duco and boat paint and costs about $20.

Ski falls the gelcoat has a thickness of close to a millimetre thick. Far thicker than any car paint.
The simplest method is 1200 wet and dry on a block and rub them out.
Grab a course cutting compound and a go by hand or machine to remove the sanding scratches.
A fine polish to remove the cutting compound.
Then wax as a final step. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/12/23/441c30ef8fa490ac2d47aeb6e312a5b0.jpg
The results of this multi stage process can restore 20year old faded and chalky gelcoat with a bit of patience.

So basically you are just rubbing down the scratches right?

Yep the scratches appear white but are actually still in the colour.

Just use any automotive polish and a machine buff. By hand will take forever. No need to use wet and dry sand paper for that. Polish will take it out easily.

Supercheap will sell a cheap variable speed polisher for less than $80. The Rockwell shop series. Look for a foam mop head for it m14 thread to suit the polisher. Get the full unit all in one not a Velcro option. $18
And then a septone fibreglass cutting compound. All done for under $120.

I had a go at similar marks on mine, also black gelcoat, using Farecla P500 by hand and on a pad (not foam), I suspect it may be too fine as it didn't make a noticeable difference.

I am going to give this a crack on my boat. We have a SeaRay that we picked up last year and the gelcoat needs some TLC. Will post up before and afters. :)

Already had the polisher, but wasn't getting good results from the wool pad and automotive cutting stuff I was using. I bought the foam pad and fibreglass cutting compound, and damn, instant results. Really impressed .I did it in the shade, but when the afternoon Sun hit the old boat, you could really tell how much difference it made. Thanks for the tip mate .

Too easy G ford. Gelcoat is very forgiving. Just remember to keep up he was coats afterwards to avoid having to do the hard work again.

Gday Scott, haven't gone near the boat since we went to Eden in March, just not enough time at the moment. I have four weeks off during Christmas and planning on getting the boat cleaned up and using it over summer. Current setup at our house is a real PITA getting the boat out and can't wait until we finish the new house in 10 months time. Having a garage instead of carport with 90 degree turn requiring electric dolly has really hampered those early morning departures.
Cheers,
Mat

No worries mate, I am hearing you about not having enough time.
I may even get to post before and after pics of mine first by the sounds of things ;)
Scott.
