I have a coxcraft 21ft 1996 boat, trailer & engine . Unfortunately been sitting around for 12 months.
Needing a trailer as mine is rusted badly. Didn't have coin back then but now I have finally.
Looking at something like this,

Also looking at repowering as well.
I have 175 mariner 2 stroke (1996) .
Unsure if I would get much for it as a trade or selling.
But have a budget of 10 - 12 k for a used engine.
Has to be a 225 4 stroke not fussed on either Honda, Suzuki or Yamaha.
I saw this,

Unsure why link won't work but it is at Brisbane Yamaha.
But saw the hours & seemed a bit to many for my liking on that price. 2013 with 2500 hrs.
Thoughts ?
Cheers Steve

If the motor checks out mechanically, I don't think I would be too bothered about the hours for the age of the motor. With that many hours, it was either owned by a lucky bugger, or it was off a commercial boat of some sort and more than likely has been fairly well maintained.

or only got serviced every 500 hours if so why do we need to service every 100
commercial boats normally re-power around the 4000hr mark as this is roughly there lifespan according to a few charter boats

Though a well maintained and loved 4 stroke should do 3-4000 hrs no problem, generally the lower units seem to get around 2000 depending on the usage.
Worth checking if it is still the original and factoring in a possible replacement if needed.
At the very least check the leg oil closely.
If it is like new then likely just been changed and maybe disguising something

right so in 2 years the previous owner has spent ($12,500 at $500 a service) thats a service once a month and approx 24hrs a week used there is not a single person I know that is able to rack up them sort of hours in 1 week (THAT WORKS TO AFFORD FISHING)let alone afford to service it that offten unless it was commercial..... i would be asking for the service history and a digital readout of the motor before purchase. IF it is all good it should last you a long time

Why so set on a 4 stroke? If on a tight budget maybe look at a merc opti or etec with much lower hours for the same coin. The only down side is resale and a 4 banger with that many hours would have little value when you are ready to turn over.

I'll be keeping boat for a long time ,can stretch a bit if a decent motor comes up.
Boss had an e-tec, wouldn't have another. Have heard a few people say this also.
Won't be buying that particular engine.

Do consider V-max or normal HPDI Yamaha engines 200hp.
They use same fuel as 4-stroke, lighter and quite, lower service cost, oil consumption is minimal.

I have a Vmax 200hp on 21ft, performance, top speed and fuel economy is unbelievable

Just be aware that gearboxes generally wear out before the powerhead needs an overhaul, you should be able to find out how many times its been put in and out of gear, id be thinking you wouldnt be too far away from a gearbox overhaul. Ive also seen stators needing replacing at around those hours too.

I would save up a little longer and find something with under 1000 hours. Goodluck!
