Thinking of replacing the Lewmar profish 700 with a Stress Free maxi or mighty. I will have to above deck mount it as the rear bulkhead of the anchor well has been cut out with a hatch to allow access from the cab. Was wondering if there is any negatives about mounting on the deck? The glassed in timber reinforcement for the lewar looks to be about 1 inch thick. Would this be strong enough? Do the drum winches put more stress on the mounting area? I would put a 10mm alloy plate about 400mmx400mm on top and underneath the mounting area to help spread the load.

I would be looking into mounting it under the pad and modifying the winch base so the fairlead is in the centre of the base if the manufacturer will allow it. A roller on the edge above deck incorporated into a stainless surround to cover the glass edge and cover the holes from the old winch and your done assuming the hatch is big enough to get the new winch through. Keeps the deck clean and the electricals of the winch out of the worst of the water

Im looking at putting on an anchor winch also and been looking at a few drum one that you can mount above where u have the cut out. Im still looking for a good one, the expose electric doesnt faze me at all. I will be using full captive waterproof connectors that in the past we have used to join power cables and drop back into the brine with no issues at all.

Check out those 2 viper winches below.
The 1000 has a full stainless motor now and is proving to be a very popular winch.

A winch on top is easier to see loading.

I have a stress free on a long boat but will look seriously at these for the project boat we are just starting. Not much info on the net about them. More expensive than a stress free.
