hey guys about a year a go i picked up a 1998 model Honda 50hp outboard i was planning on using the outboard on my composite boat im building but times are though and i could use that couple of grand the motor is worth just wondering if anyone knows how to decode the Honda bearings? my main crank bearing has printed "D8C Q" does anyone know what size bearing this might be?

looking on this aussie Honda site http://www.hondapartsaustralia.com.au/parts/?type=MA&year=1998&model=2680 the bearings come in "colours" and rated A-G alphabetical so i cant work it out as mine have no colours on the back of the bearings

also does anyone know how to clean the slight surface rust off the conrods? the whole engine has been sitting in my shed un-assembled for over a year

Gary, from GD marine will be able to sort you out on that one. He is a member of this site. Soak the rods in diesel or coke and use a scourer on them.

Soak the rods only (no bearings) in MOLASSES they will come out like new

colour marking are on the side wall of the bearing

You need to check the marking on the crank and the block to select the right bearings, then install them and do a crush test with flexi gauge . you are looking for .020-.038mm failure to do this correctly will result in an early engine failure

thanks guys much appreciated for the post

one half shell of the main bearings has a very old black marking on the side wall but no markings on the rod bearing as the steel part of the bearing is rusted along with the rod i will check the other two rods today when i go out to the shed

i see Coles sells Molasses so i'll see if i can pickup a jar

The rod bearings are diff there is a number stamped on the side of the rod, that corresponds with the marks on the crank to select the bearings

email and I will send you the pdf
