Hi all we have started a new project, Building a flat nose punt to use on the dams & in the Bribie passage & rivers
Building in 3Mm plate alloy, Water line length is 3.5 M, Total length is 3.6 M, Beam is 1.5M & depth of sides 460 Mm
How much horsepower do you experienced people think this needs
Not sure of the finished weight yet wont be real light, Will have a casting deck up front were the bow rises & storage under, 2 cross boat seats built with alloy step tread , Built in battery & fuel tank behind the rear seat, About 100Mm flat return back into the boat to mount rod holders etc., We are thinking 25Hp 4stroke till steer
What's your thoughts on this, Any advice greatly appreciated http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/attachment.php?attachmentid=108491&stc=1http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/attachment.php?attachmentid=108492&stc=1http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/attachment.php?attachmentid=108493&stc=1Cheers COL

9.9 - 15 maybe 25 is a heavy engine and the boat doesnt have much width to it
no hull shape to handle any speed or cornering
a 25hp yamaha weighs 78 odd kilos
a 350 dart with a similar width but more "sea keeping ability" is only rated to 15hp

G'day
Tohatsu 18/Merc 15 super will be plenty. Light and powerful. Just watch the 2stroke restrictions on any dams/closed waterways you plan to use it on.

I used to have the old Stessel Duck punt it had only 2mm bottom and sides but was 3.7 and 1.4 wide........Started life with a 15 Jonno then upgraded it in 98' with a Bran new 25hp Evinrude.........
IMO a 20-25 Yammie 2 carb 2stroke would be ideal.....The 25 fours are pretty heavy maybe checkout the Honda 20 I think they are not too bad weight wise.

Have a look at this on Youtube.
This is how they test for 30hp Max on the Quintrex 400 dart.
Look up - Quintrex speed turn test.
Do you reckon your rig could turn close to what this one can ?

I reckon you are on the money. I run the 15 super with a foil on a 3.4 car top barra punt and two up loaded with gear it is just right. With the extra weight it may be a bit under done. The 25's are a bit weighty so it may be that a couple of pods for extra floatation and to stop it sticking it's nose in the air may well be the go. The little merc is a great donk but there will only be more restrictions as time goes by in the fresh water and if you do any trolling for barra, flatties etc the 4 banger will be streets ahead. I have actually been considering something similar but was going to do it in 4mm - overkill but it should last for ever.

Making good progress there. Mate I use to make custom ally boats and the punts the same size as yours using 3mm plate 20-25 hp was the weapon of choice. I had a few people throw 30 hp on if they were carrying extra weight. Good to see when your finished the girl.

Awesome animal and you are doing it yourself, no mean feat to me as lately I have been learning to weld alum, it's a black art that's looking already to stay above my ability's.
If not a problem what might be the end expected cost?...welding wire/gas/alum sheet/extrusions and all.
keep up the good work.
