As the heading suggests what would be the pro's and cons for each say 250hp in both. The boat to suit would go on a whittley SL 24. Hard top 6.8m.
the price difference is substantially cheaper for the inboard around 10k

is there a performance difference
are the services dearer
is there more maintenance with a inboard
it would get used roughly every 2 weeks

cheers scott

$10k is a lot of fuel and servicing... As for performance can't say.

don't go Volvo whatever you do, nothing but dramas.

Look at the TDI mercruisers or Yanmars,

Outboard every time for me, unless you start talking BIG boats.

why is a outboard better than inboards?
surely in this day and age the inboards should be as good as each other just like all the new 4 stroke"s

if its on a trailer boat, there Is no difference, I would have an inboard over and outboard without hesitation,

Depends if you want a car engine sitting right at the stern of your boat that you have to walk around, and yet still have a leg in the water to fish around, unless it's a big boat, I would not even dream of an inboard.

this is all the room you loose on a 6.8m boathttp://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/attachment.php?attachmentid=108342&stc=1http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/attachment.php?attachmentid=108343&stc=1

Jsmfun you will find many different opinions with outboard v inboard.

I can tell you what I have found.

You do get a better ride with the inboard as the weight is down lower.

Cost of servicing a 4 stroke outboard and a inboard much the same. (I would steer away from any inboard that is only raw water cooled)

You lose a little room in the boat but you can work around that. (I made a cleaning table over mine and it also turns into a bed)

Need to keep on top of your risers and make sure you do the required checks or it will not be good.

If you are going with a duo prop you will find they steer much better at slow speeds.

If you are buying new really have a serious look at going diesel if you can and I don't want to start a war petrol v diesel ::)

At the end YOU need to be happy with your choice.

Nice looking rig

18 foot American imports I was told Volvo over Mercury anyday. Parts dearer but don't need them as often. Better clutches. My 4.2 was designed back in the 70's and is a GM truck engine. It will corrode out before rebuild. New 24 footers...dunno but I thought the new Whittleys had diesels with neutrasalt flushers...thats where I would go. Just my opinion.

Personally, the only time I would go inboard would be for diesel.

A diesel inboard over an outboard any time for me.
Once you have owned a diesel powered boat you will never want to go back to an outboard unless you are downsizing boats.

You will get better fuel burn from the diesel. I am replacing the petrol in my boat with a diesel and the main reason is to give me better range for the type of fishing I will be doing. It will give me a better cruise speed and I will be looking at burning very close to half of what I do now. If you are buying the boat new I would spend the extra and install a diesel. You will never regret it.
