I had only just listed this on Gumtree when "Solomona" struck (after I answered his initial phone text message asking me to email him)
I am sure others will have already had these so this for those that have yet to sell on Gumtree, be aware of these cons going on.

Hello,
Thanks for the swift response, I need you to understand that i am
willing and ready to purchase it right away as i really appreciate the
price stated in the AD, however i will like you to re-confirm the
price by stating it in your return e-mail for verification, possibly
have more pictures of it, put it off the AD site and consider me as
your favorite buyer as i am buying this for my Dad and due to the
nature of my job and my present location as i am a marine engineer...i
will not be able to come for inspection,i'm a very busy type as i work
long hours everyday,i have gone through your advertisement and i am
satisfied with it.

As for the payment..i can only pay via the fastest and secure way to
pay online i.e (PayPal) here, as i do not have access to my bank
account online, but i have it attached to my pay pal account, and this
is why i insisted on using pay pal to pay.

I have a private courier agent that will come for the pick up after
the payment has been made ...so no shipping included and With the
issue of my details, transferring the name of ownership and signing of
all paperwork will be done by the courier services company agent so
you don't have to worry about that as I will be providing you with my
drivers licence. It will be so sweet if you can send me your PayPal
email now so i can
pay in right away and also include your address in your reply as i
don't really have much time on here.If you don't have a paypal
account, you can easily set up one...log on to www.paypal.com.au (http://www.paypal.com.au/) and
sign up its very easy but if you don't feel like signing up, just get
back to me with your bank details... i would have loved to talk to you
on phone
but i work mainly on the sea and our phone network is down on the sea
right now due to bad stormy weather, that was why i sent you a text, i
even wonder how my message delivered to your phone but for now we can
only communicate through the same mailing channel.await your reply
asap.

Regards,
Solomona.

The in-laws were selling their car and rang me to ask if I had a paypal account they could use, I said you don't need a paypal account to sell a car its just a scam but they were adamant, the guy was genuine but worked on an oil rig and was buying the car for his daughter, there was no telling them so I left them to it. After a few weeks they realised they were being scammed, he was asking for money to "Have the car checked over" or some such....they must get the odd person falling for it I guess

Happens all the time. I tell the one's on oil rigs that are fly in fly out ring me when you get back to land and surprisingly they never ring. Mate of mine told them to send him their contact details so he could forward onto the federal police, not surprisingly this was the last they annoyed him on that particular occasion.
Simple way of getting rid of them tell you will only deal with someone who is willing to talk to you over the phone.

Don't even reply to these emails guys.
You are confirming your email address as valid and active if you reply

they don't just make money from poor people fall in these trap.
they also will sell off their active email database to other spammer/scammers

Few months back, our web server was hacked and sent hundreds of thousands of spam emails,
email was consistent of job advertising offer, that we found you and your experience is great and we need you and we will pay big $$$ -- sort of rubbish content
it was clearly a spam email
we realised the issue and sorted straight away
I kept receiving legitimate replies for days after, some swearing some genuinely interested in obviously dodgy offer
I couldn't believe how many replies received

I lot of people gets affected by these loosers

Notice how there are rather large gaps in the sentencing? Almost like a cut and paste if you will.

Why is Gumtree such a big hit with scammers?

seems gumtree as its free attracts alot of "wood ducks" people who are non the wiser! and scammers must have a better strike rate on gumtree for sure, my mother in law got nailed on a antique wardrobe she was selling, sent money ($800) to a western union account to cover the shipping which the "buyer" was including in the total price they would pay into paypal, then the mrs asked me what i thought and well i knew straight away i felt bad she didnt ask for advice based on a similar spiel as above, but goodbye $800 clams! Don't ever reply to a text message that shows up as a name and not a number

I advertised my boat for sale on Gumtree and within ten minutes of putting the ad up my phone was in meltdown.I had one text that said " I am happy to buy your vehicle please send me your bank details and I will pay straight away".The next text only said "*Boat*". He was told to disappear not very politely.
