View Full Version : 3.5m Tinny recommendations

Hi guys im after a good well constructed 3.5m tinny for crabbing and fishing up the creeks and river's, I have a near new 10hp Honda 4 stroke short shaft that I'd like to use. I'm on the Fraser coast but don't mind driving for the right boat.


I've looked at a few boats but haven't been impressed, surely somebody builds a tinny with sheet thicker than 1.6mm?

They are very thin on the ground. If you are after something really tuff I would be looking at a custom plate build. It will cost though.

Most people who want a 3.5mt boat want to car top it, so the manufacturers keep the weight down. Possible the Quintrex 350 Explorer would be one of the heavier boats. The 370 will be faster though.

Thanks guys At 1.6mm thick etc the hulls and sides must dent up really quick?

It's a lot harder alloy than you think.

Like anything it depends how you look after it and how you use it. The way they put the folds into it really stiffens it up but they are by no means indestructable.

Would a glass fibre/ grp boat be no good up the creeks?

Hello Sansdstorm,

Consider something a bit different.

Google Finn Spindrift Dinghy.
Small poly catamaran.
Indestructible and much more stable than a tinny.
There is a guy on this site who has one, track him down and ask him how it goes.

Or any of the poly dinghies for that matter.

Or SandStorm, you could just buy a good second hand tinny and modify the transom with a pair of aluminium pods on either side of the motor like I did to give me lots of weight carrying capacity in the tail end.

With the 9.9 HP I can still stand on the pods and cast a line and plenty of capacity for even more weight.
