Hi All,

Just about to reneiw the Insurance and thought I would do the ring around. Currently with Club Marine and rang Nautilus which were $200 dearer. Then rang RACQ about the same $200 dearer and then rang Youi. Well what a surprise $300 cheaper. Think this was mainly due to the fact that I use it in their terms "Less than once a month". I only do about 5 to 6 trips a year. I have read the PDS and there are a few clauses in there that I am warey of like any rust on the trailer (Surface rust on it) which they may back out of a claim.

Has anyone had any dealings with them and what was the results?

Thanks Goona

I was with youi (automotive claim) and got stuffed around for almost 3 months. In the end i finally cash settled just so I could walk away from them and choose my own repairer. Yes they were cheaper premiums but it cost me a lot of time and hassle in the long run.

I've stayed with club marine for the boat - I've had one claim and it was sorted really quick and easy. With the cars I've have gone back to aami as they were easier to deal with. . My bikes with swann but I've never claimed so can't comment on them.

I had a claim with budget direct which was handled extremely well but I don't think they do marine?

Good luck with youi if you go that way , cheers Ryan

RACQ for me was $130 cheaper than Club Marine, same excess, same value... includes 25% multi-policy discount - guess that's the difference

I go with YMI $580, they were $450 cheaper with a lower excess and same value than RACT whom I already have my Car and House with, I guess RACT just aren't interested in Insuring boats.

I have the boat with Youi. Cheaper than all the others by quite a bit. After having a car claim with them, that had a number of abnormal complications which they went above and beyond to resolve, I couldn't have been happier for that so willing to do the same with the boat.

I think they can all have their issues potentially during a claim, so am sure there are bad experiences for all of the insurers out there if you ask around.

Youi quotes are based on how often you use the boat. I told them I use it 26 times a year, and they were very expensive. Suncorp came in way under others for a $10k value boat. Suncorp have revised thier boat policies in the last month. Considering thier good record for payouts on housing and floods, I think I'll go with them.

Trident (QBE) $240
Suncorp $262
RACQ $293
Club Marine $297
NRMA $363
YOUi $456

I did the ring around today and i cant believe the complications getting insurance.
Youi - Don't insure trailer boats with 3 axles. (Tri-axle)
Suncorp - Don't insure trailer boats over 40 years old. Regardless if they have been restored and have marine surveyors compliance. WTF
NRMA - would insure me but not until next Monday as they have new marine guidelines coming in to place this week end.
Nautilus - Only insure old boats over 40 years old on market value which means i would get nothing in the event of a loss.
Club marine - I wouldnt bother ringing.
I'm still searching for some one to give my $1600 too.
The moral of the story if your boat is over 40 years old take it to the dump immediately as it will never be any good.
Cheers Jim

I'll save you the trouble Jimmy and give you $10,000 for it. That'll save you taking that old POS to the tip, and in fact you'll make a killing on that old boat ... :) :)

PS. When you going to post some refurb pics of the Sea F you restored ?
Cheers

I have been insured with many over the years. Currently my cat (rag boat) is with QBE. I broke the mast racing in January, and I have racing cover. The new mast was stood about 3 weeks ago. I had to fight them for it. I would love to say its a one off, but I also had a motorcycle stolen 3 years ago, insured with QBE. Once again, they put me through hell. The problem here is not QBE, its the insurance assessors they use.

I had my last house and contents with RACQ, and I have all the cars with RACQ. In the last 15 odd years I have made 2 claims, once when I had a mower and whipper snipper stolen, and once when I backed the car into a post. The claims were effortless. My motorcycle that was stolen recently was insured with Swann, once again the claim was effortless. I was prepared for hell, so I got the 2 keys ready, plus the 3 keys from my disc lock expecting a full inquisition from an assessor. All I got was one phone call a few questions and letter saying the money will be in the bank.

The biggest problem with RACQ, is they do house and car insurance well, but they dont get boats and they dont get motorcycles. Insure a boat with RACQ and you cant do a package, you have to give them value for trailer, motor and hull. Its a pain in the arse.

So for me now, House and car is going to RACQ. I get the multi policy discount, plus another discount because I am a silver (almost gold) member. Bikes are going through Swann. I am about to approach OAMPS to chase insurance for my boat because they specialise in yachting and because I want to give QBE the arse. The problem I have with my boat is its a racing catamaran, and its not a production boat therefor Club Marine is not interested. For us sailors, getting insurance on multihulls is difficult. Its a shame about Club Marine, they would be my preference because I have heard a lot of good stuff about them, including on here where they covered one gentleman who insurance was out of date due to a clerical error on Club Marines behalf.

Actually, our rental is through CGU. Never made a claim though. I think its hard to judge an insurance company untill you actually have to make a claim.

I dont think the breakdown that RACQ requires is a bad thing. For ex if your motor gets totalled or stolen then you get paid for that. Be careful nominating values that are genuine market as best you can.

Yes making a claim is where you suddenly dont mind having paid a little more than other companies if the claims process is easy. RACQ and Suncorp are both good at the pointy end. Racq wont do inboards of any description.
