Tohatsu outboards

I am looking to purchase a 50 hp Tohatsu 2 stroke to fit on a 4.3 SF stessco. Can anyone gpive me any reports on said motor good or bad.

very good motor, strong for it's size. good enough for merc the worlds largest outboard manufacturer to rebadge as their 2 stroke 40hp (derated)
also widely used in inflatable racing. before the rules were changed to pretty much make the tohatsu the only choice, it was still considered the stronger (i.e. faster) motor over the yammie 50hp.
I have one on a 14.f foot heavy deep v glass dory and find the stock prop a bit small (hits rev limiter) went up tot a 13'. Can get props from boats.net for $90 ex postage!
you can get the poverty pack (manual everything) short shaft for about 4500 or less new. Starts easy. 3 cylnders so much better than omc 2 cylender forty and fifty. Also very light.
Only thing with poverty pack is gas strut/ gas assist lift would be nice. Once you go electric start and PTT then it gets a fair bit more expensive though.

The MD50B2 TLDI is OK for those dams which require low emission motors.

Thanks for the replies, i am purchasing the electric start and trim model. I believe it should push the 430 SF stessco along well.

You will be pleased. They are top shelf quality, made in a big new factory in Japan. Focus is on reliability and function rather than form. I had a TLDI90 for 6 years and it never missed a beat. Even though it was well out of warranty, the distributor notified of an issue they found and arranged a free replacement fuel filter bracket, so good support too. You see lots of them on commercial boats up north, and that says a lot about them.

I picked up a 2006 TLDI90 that had been sitting for 6 years and with some fresh fuel and oil started no dramas. Haven't put it on the boat yet but it certainly seems reliable.

Have had my M90A (carbied two stroke) since 2009 and it is yet to let me down. Has been a very reliable motor that uses less fuel than the old 1970 60hp it replaced (for the type of use I give it). Can get thirsty if kept at WOT for a long time (but boy is the old girl moving!), but as I spend most of my time in the 3200-4500 rpm range as it has plenty on offer in that rev range as it suits my old fibreglass hull design.

Can't speak highly enough of mine despite the stigma that some attach to the brand (which is completely unfounded these days). Like any outboard, just keep the servicing up to them, flush them good, and it will look after you.

I have a 4.20 Stessco bass tracker and I had a TLDI40 on it. I loved it. It was always so reliable. I was very happy with the motor and I think you will be too.
