Ahhh maybe he's got a few tremors and it was meant to be 300 hrs.;D. Especially when he says gearbox is like new.....does that mean they have replaced the other gearbox because its worn out?:(

So 12400 hrs on a Honda wouldn't be too shabby then

I would say the gearbox has been replaced in the last 12 months or so which is fair biff for a motor with those hours. Realistically, most people put less than 100 hrs a year on their motors, at that rate that motor probably has a lot of years left in it. And at $7k, it represents a fair saving on a new one.

3,000 hours is a very long way from being impressive, plenty of old school 2 strokes have passed that milestone, and plenty of modern motors have lots more too.

Most outboards die of other things rather than being physically worn out. You will see examples of all brands with what seem like really high hours on them. Generally always commercial application so the hours are run up quick before the ravages of the marine environment get a foothold. 12400 hours is getting up there though Garry. What application is that used in?

12400 hours sounds like the WA redclaw grower that had a brainwave and mounted a ??????HP fourstroke on a structure in his dam with the motor trimmed up a bit and chocked to circulate the water. Apparently it ran 24hrs a day(allowing for services which was a mixture of Lucas oil stabiliser and oil and possibily VIAGRA) from a bulk fuel tank.

I know a cat that had 7000 hrs on a pair of 135 opti's.

So what ya saying is that when looking at new 2nd hand boats dont go freaking out if the motor has a thousand hr on the clock?

Mate i once bough a 2 year old motor with over 2000 hours on the clock - net boat. Was happy at about 1/3rd the cost of a new one. Didnt miss beat - look and went like it was a brand spanker. Hot hours...recreational that was say 15 years old and those hours I would be wary but wouldnt be put off it it was well looked after and tested well. I have a 2000 model yammy 115 2 stroke and it is like new. Depends on the motor model too...

Cheers

My estuary boat got re powered with a pro crabbing motor. 2yrs old with 1650hrs on a 4s 60hp yammy. Purrs like a kitten. I've put another 200hrs on in 18months and am as happy as a pig in shit.

Service history and quality mechanics make the difference.

I would buy and ex professional motor over a recreational motor any day.
