Ok I am at a stage of painting the interior of my 1993 signature 530F.

Now I've started the flowcoat finish on the storage pockets etc. Brushed over a very smooth faired area. Overlapping it 2" over the areas to be painted grey. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/28/8atepesy.jpg

I plan on using grey epoxy finish coat on the rest of the cabin area, cockpit walls and non skid areas.

The problem I am having is a poor brush coat on the flowcoat. I will need to sand it all back to take out the major brush marks in cosmetic areas. I plan to run through the grits back to 800gr.

And the cabin bunk areas are still a standard white gelcoat moulded part. Should this area be fleck finished the same as everything else? Or leave it with a tape line on the new work.

I have a rough plan in my head.
Roll on the grey epoxy inside the cabin, non skid on the floor and cockpit walls. Pull all the tapes that create the borders onto the white.

Wet sand all the poor finished cosmetic important areas.

Using the grey epoxy I will fleck over the white areas. This should blend into the rolled grey areas.

But the question i am struggling with is, should I use a final black fleck on both the white and the grey areas. Or a white dot only on grey to lighten the cabin.

What do you guys think would look better?

What the white would look like with a fleck.

The photos below are the same paint system. Exact colours used. The non skid only got base coat and glass beads. So looks a bit darker than it should. So the interior of my cabin will be this dark.

For me I've never been a fan of the flecked look. If that was my boat I'd keep it a solid colour. Just my opinion. Is there a reason people do the flecked look, or is it just cosmetic?

Flecking helps to hide the edges of glass tape lines and little imperfection like brush strokes.

That makes sense. I don't know much about fiberglass work but could you sand out those lines and spray paint it? Just out of curiosity. Looks great so far 👍

Nsl. Spray painting is a unnessary evil. The prep work to get a smooth panel out weighs the benefits of spraying 2pac paints. Spray paints are usually too thin to handle the rough knocks inside a cockpit. Think of gaffs, tackle boxes, eskies sliding around the floors and storage bins.

I did go close to spraying the white areas with an epoxy garage floor paint system. But did not want to spend days sanding all the hidden corners to a respectable standard.

Fuel is also a big thing. If you spill any fuel onto some paints they go funny and peel.

Flowcoat handles everything and only takes a quick polish to get it looking good again.

I'm trailing a new paint on the nonskid to see how it holds up.

I worked on super yachts as a labourer years ago so believe me I know about the prep work haha. But like I said I've had no experience with fibre glass. How do you apply flow coat

Flowcoat is only suitable to brush application. It can be sprayed through a massive tip 3mm plus. But the orange peel is difficult to get acceptable. Most builder just brush it on. Then wet and dry it back to a polished finish.

That's the avenue I will take on the vertical surfaces inside the cockpit. The storage pockets that will be seen everyday. But the bulkheads and kill in etc. won't matter if the brush marks are visible.

I think a black fleck over both areas will look good. And maybe add a white fleck over the dark grey areas to lighten it up inside the cabin.

Thanks for explaining that for me. I reckon a black fleck would look good. What colour is the outside hull? I'm thinking a fleck that matches darker hull colours that you have on the outside of the hull. Are you putting any vinyl stickers on the outside of the hull?

This is the basic sticker colour scheme for the boat.
And the digital mock up for the upholstery. Which is nearly ready for inspection.

I think there is enough red in the boat with graphics and gelcoat. So will stick with grey and black.

If you want a uniform appearance roll it on with a foam roller. This will give no brush marks but will still have a mild stippled effect, this can then be rubbed to a smooth finish using wet and dry and polished to a high gloss if need be. Jim.

Thanks Jim I will attempt that next time.

I see you have black of the Bermuda sticker and black stripes on your upholstery. I reckon black fleck will look great mate.
