Hi all.

We stopped at Peel today for a swim and found this guy peering out of the sand. Is it a spanner crab. At first I thought it was a bug and got quite excited as there're quite tasty. But we left him how we found him.

Cheers nic

I thought they were only found in deep water. But it appears not to be so. 😃

I've never seen a live one and was surprised at its color. And the way he was facing up out of the sand, you wouldn't want to step on one.

So are they any good on the table. I'm not a big fan of crabs but bugs are awesome. Are they similar to crab or bug.

I was pumping yabbies on a sand bank in the Noosa River once and came across 1 about 3 times that size. Thought it was just a discarded shell at first until it moved. I didn't realize spanners were red before they were cooked. Certainly tasted good.

Must be global warming that's doing it. They are migrating to shallower water in advance of the great flood?

Haha Rodman, that was my first thought. Maybe it's clear evidence that the green zones around peel are working 😃

I was telling a mate from work about it and he used to own a fish shop. He said he had a customer come in and complain that the spanner crabs he bought were all chewy and gross. So he asked the guy "well how did you cook it?" The guy said "what?" Haha yuck
