I just bought a 2.5 HP 4 stroke SAIL outboard motor at auction, got it for a good price but no warranty as I bought it at auction. Took it out in my little tinny and it blew up when I was flushing it out at home.

Never again!

Did it literally "blow up" or like a Rolls Royce "fail to proceed":-[

Hello MTAQ,
when you say "blew up", what exactly happened?

I am working until Monday and will pick it up from the mechanic Monday afternoon but his phone call today said the block had split/broken and it was a complete write off - will know more on Monday afternoon.

I was flushing it out after a few hours on the bay and it suddenly revved up and stopped. Would not start again so off to the mechanic it went.

Maybe next time, buy a motor motor, not a sail motor!!

Feel sorry for you, but you said it all in your first sentence.

I just bought a 2.5 HP 4 stroke SAIL outboard <[bottom end market outboard] motor at auction< [so you never heard it run or new its past], got it for a good price< [no one else put a bid in because they thought the risk was to big] but no warranty<[= even higher risk] as I bought it at auction.

I think you played Russia roulette and lost.

New or used ?
If new was it Pre-delivered?
Did you change the oil?

I also was tempted by the price at the auction but was not sure whether they were returns or not and were faulty. The auctions are great places to dump some faulty goods. Feel sorry for you mate. I just hope that you can take it on board as a life modifying and enriching experience that is worth the money that you lost.

I'm still guessing either no oil in it or it only had rust protection shipping oil and wasn't changed out before use?
Or was it pumping properly at home when flushing? Overheated on the muffs somehow?
