1983 Evinrude V4 gear box problems..

G'day guys.
1983 Evinrude V4 115hp.
Looking for some info in regards to noise and a roughness in the gearbox.
I replaced the water pump over the Xmas break and that is when a the noise appeared. I have removed the gear case, and water pump. When you push down on the input shaft it feels like the gears are riding on each other and if pulled up slightly it turns smoothly. I have a manual for it but before I disassemble it i was hoping some of you guys might have had some experience with them.

Hi Chimo.
