I don’t have a problem with my outboard so this is more of a discussion.

My outboard has a 5 year warranty, it would seem that to be covered it must be serviced by the manufacturers recommended service agent. Well the car industry tried to stipulate this and failed, so how would the outboard companies fair in enforcing their warranty requirements? If it was a car and you took it to a licenced mechanic it would still be covered, should it not be the same for outboards?

Cheers

My understanding of the warranty being valid, you can carry out servicing yourself if you wish or have it completed by a source other than the manufacturer., Providing you use Genuine parts and lubricants and follow the manufacturers servicing recommendations. Keep detailed logs of works carried out, engine hours, dates and receipts for parts purchased. If your engine has an issue that is not related to your servicing your warranty claim cannot be refused based on completing the servicing outside of an Yamaha authorised dealer.

In fact on the Aus Yamaha website it sates you will get an extended warranty if you complete all your servicing at an authorised Yamaha dealer, my take on this means if you completed the servicing yourself or with an outside source you would still get your 4 year standard warranty on a four stroke outboard.

I got the first few services done on my yamaha 4 stroke and asked them about 5 year warranty and was told that as I had not had a service every year my warranty was no longer available. 2007 model with 65 hours on it.

Just be wary of what dealers tell you re warranty fella's. It may not be the gospel according to hoyle!

There is a statutory warranty these days that means that if you have a problem within a reasonable timeframe from purchase, you may well have coverage despite what dealers try to tell you. The timeframe will depend on the nature of the purchase, the price, and what a reasonable expectation is for that product to have a serviceable life.

Food for thought.

i am always interested to see how many of our boating colleagues in the US, the majority of whom service their engines themselves, and simply keep receipts and a record of what was done. The dealers/manufacturers there accept this as normal practice and under those circumstances there are no problems if a warranty issue arises.

There are of course some service items that require specialist tools or parts to complete, one that springs to mind is the checking and adjustment of valve clearances and if necessary replacement of shims on many Suzuki 4 strokes. Best to get those completed by authorized service personnel.

Yes that is correct, the manufacturer cant even make you use genuine parts, what you must do is use parts that meet the manufacturers specifications !!

What they can do is stipulate if you get it serviced at the correct intervals they will offer additional warranty. To over come this you just buy a brand that offers 5 years warranty straight up like Honda :) Have you seen the price of a 4.2 Litre 225HP yammy oil filter.. $79.95 RRP no wonder they give you a bucket of Yamardness when you buy one :)

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I was going by what was implied in my service/ warranty book. One of the reasons I posted was that the nearest authorised service agent for my outboard and I don't get along. (Didn't buy a boat from him). The one I use is two hours away, however there is a Yamaha service agent nearby who I am impressed with and would not mind using.

Aaaaah first day of 5 weeks holidays! ;D

Cheers!

What Garry said on the servicing, genuine or compatible parts must be used.
Regardless of the product or warranty offered from January 2011 there is implied warranty on all products sold in Australia. The product must be fit for the purpose it was intended for and must be of acceptable quality, that is lasting, with no faults. Acceptable quality takes into account what would normally be expected for the type of product and cost.
