i've just removed all the stainless steel rod holders from my plate alloy boat to repair the bubbling paint around them.

now that is all repaired i was not sure to re-install the stainless rod holders or go the plastic type rod holders??

my only issue with plastic is i'm not sure how strong they are.

oh and these are the gunwale flush mounted type i'm referring to.

anyone with thoughts??

barrier between all the stainless and alloy like thin nylon sheet / uv protected choppong board and all good.

Why not have alloy ones welded in then paint ?

stick with stainless but use a layer of sikaflex between the gunnel and holder. That will certainly be a big help.

Get cast or fabricated alloy ones. Why fit dissimilar metals in a situation where you have the choice ?Leigh

would have gone alloy but from what i saw from what was available they are all weld in items and have a smaller flange than the off the shelf stainless holders.

which then would lead to the next issue of filling the old mounting holes from the stainless rod holders if that is even possible?

i have heard that sikaflex helps alot with future corrosion and from what i found after i removed the stainless rod holders the paint peeled off perfectly under where the rubber gasket sat and looked as though moisture got in under the rubber hence the corrosion.

I've got plastic ones, and I've used Duralac on the screws and I still have paint bubbling. I'm going to try that teflon gel stuff when i re-paint in the future.

Great option. Only issue is fixing them. I recently had to remove stainless screws from alluminium and had to use a cold chisel. When I had to re-fix the item I used large alluminium pop rivets instead.

Shop by product - aluminium
Choose type - countersunk and later nuts

Refine the search on the left hand side to bolt size & nylocs.

Supermarket: food container aisle, look for a pack of those v thin "cutting boards" with at least one white one. Easy cut out to rod holder shape and place between holder and ally gunwhale. Also cut out rough "washers" and drill thru to act as the washers for underneath nuts.
Alternatively get some thin acrylic from local plastic shop and/or nylon washers.
Use supplied nuts/bolts and as always plenty of sika. Turps to smooth/tidy up.

If it still bubbles simply cut off offending region of boat with welding torch and replace with fibreglass...over time you will end up with the boat you should have bought in the first place. :2vrolijk_08:

Did you get them ?

I got 8 today & 2 of there 230mm cleats. The rod holders look like they will do the job well. Nice thick flanges & tube section. Leigh

PS: Australian made & nice guy to deal with.

yeah mate, i took delivery a week before Christmas.

i agree, i rang matilda foundry direct, the guy was easy to speak with, easy to place an order and i received delivery 5 days after order.

and for $93 i had 5 arrive at my doorstep.

they were very well made and seem to me they will last a very long time.

if i remember and have the time i'll post a picture of how they turned out, but i'm really impressed and very suprised not used more commonly on alloy boats.

One thing to remember with using stainless screws and bolts on your boats. Try to get a really high quality stainless steel screw driver when fitting them. If not the ferrous material gets transferred to the star groves on the screw and ends up rusting and looking crap.

These are the bolt in alloy rod holders from matilda foundry. The only difference to the weld in is the dimples for drilling. Leigh100271100270100269100268100267
