I was speaking to a Tohatsu dealer the other day that had a 40HP motor for sale that had been stroked out to a 50HP motor.

Can this also be done with the other brands, or is Tohatsu unique in this area? Or is the dealer full of it, and talking out of his arse?

I doubt if it has been "stroked out", which implies that the engine has been bored and new larger postons/crank fitted. Very expensive to do that.

On the 2 stoke tohatsus, like many engines, there will be engines that share the same block and pistons etc, so that for example the 40 and 50 hp will be the same basic engines. I do know that on some Tohatsus, the thing that limits the hp between such engines can be as simple as changing a carby link and resetting the timing. This is quite common on the toeys in particular to do this.

Ask the dealer if that is what has been done to this engine, and get him to explain exactly how it was done. If it all sounds ok, should be no issue of concern.
