Looking to upgrade the donks -advice needed please

Took possession of a Glacier Bay cat recently and I'm going through the exercise of getting the rig exactly how I want her... Part of this is upgrading her heart from 2005 4 stroke 115hp suzukis to the new 140hp 4 stroke suzi's with lean burn.

I've never really had to swap motors before and I've no idea where's best to list em or if its easier to just trade them in.

Whats your experience?

probably a bit of a two way bet, you may get a better deal without trade, but then, you have to mess about selling two motors, and then splitting the controls and stuff like that, I reckon shop around for a good deal and just trade them, even though selling them would probably be easy, but remember they are more than likely XL shafts, possible counter rotation?

I think if it was me I'd be trying to sell them before you change over that way you may find a buyer looking to upgrade from old 2 strokes on a cat. Would have to be quite a few out there still running 2 strokes that can not justify new 4 strokes but would jump at a couple of 4 strokes at the right price. Being to test the motors before buying would be a big bonus.

ok so i guess leave on my cat would be the best option- especially to let prospective owners test them as well... Motors are not counter rotating so essentially would appeal to any boat owners. I'm also aiming to keep the existing controls, binnacles and steering but merely sell just the motors -does this seems wise?

I advertised my old motors had a few enquirers ended up trading them in for what i could get and fitted new motors was the best way to go for me now they are some one else s headache and i am wrapped in new motors.

You won't have any trouble selling the 4 strokes on ebay or gumtree. I've been watching the market for a while and they don't last long. Not having controls shouldn't be an problem so long as your price reflects that. I just sold my 115 4 stroke in two hours through a local forum.

Hilta Have a look on boatpoint for a good deal on 140's. There's a place in Melb advertising them for 13 something and being 2013 mdls should be the lean burn job's.

Update the controls and everything so you have full warranty on the instal so you know all the wiring is routed correctly and then you will be trouble free. The df150 is a much sweeter motor but unsure the HP required and also pricing. Were you only going with zuk as you were thinking of a easier changeover as if you decide to change all controls it opens it up to all brands?. Do you know of a sistership who has run the zuk 140 and did it perform Ok and have decent economy for what you want ?

the boat currently has 115's.. Reason i;'m going to the 140hp is to give the boat better cruising speed and economy at lower rev's - I will prop it to suit my needs.

I''m sticking with suzukis as it is a straight swap and the only motor i would ever consider is a yamaha but the weight difference is the clinching factor. There do not seem to be any glacier bay isle runner 2270's with 140hps fitted that i know of here so i cannot extract figures. I do know that the boat could benefit from a bit more hp and because the price and the weight is marginal between 115 and 140 it seems like a logical upgrade. I do not plan on driving flat chat but aim to bring the cruise speed up from 36km/h at 4100 to possibly 40km/h at 4100 with the new motors.

There was a GB forum in the USA and they had links to tests and data for a range of motors on different models. Might be worth the search to see if what you are thinking is possible and the right combination.

So many more in the usa so you should be able to find out exactly what to expect from diff motor combos.

Used to see quite a lot with permatrims on em advertised but not sure if it was more efficient lower speed plane ?

Already have the permatrims fitted.. I've being trying to track down a 2270 isle runner with stats on 140hp's but have come up with nudda.

They changed the numbers ( same hull- just marketing) so maybe ask on the GB sites as they will know which one is which and depending on what hardtop etc it may get you the numbers.

Emailed a mate of a mate in the states who has had a bit to do with them and he thinks there won't be huge performance gains due to them not fully planing hull shape. Opinion was to wring the neck of the 115s a bit and use a bit more fuel and keep money for repower in your pocket. Money is tight in the states at the minute . He asked about fins on the motor as work better with them. He suggested you get onto the GB forum and get others performance figures and also mentioned the model numbers have changed but he wasn't sure which ones were which. Get sistership performance numbers to ensure you are getting best possible performance from 115s. Very good value boat in the states for a nice useful boat but never were a rocketship as you know.

PS are your speeds in MPH ? It seems slow if they are KM/h? Should be getting 40 mph with 115 unless you have hardtop etc.

Yes speeds are in km/h sadly. I checked the figures and I'm on par with other comparable boats out there . It is a slow boat and it seems the minute you push it over 30km/h there are diminishing returns. She can hit a top of 50 km/h but fuel usage is crazy. I've read through the fb forums but will start again with my research, I've even contacted gb themselves but to no avail.

That is odd. I am sure when years ago I looked at these the performance was better. maybe I am mistaken but if it was that low I would never have done any further looking at them. I remember F & B did a test on them . That is just a lot slow to get anywhere. I'm out of ideas

Might be worth a call to one of the other private sellers in Australia and confirm what props and performance they are getting and confirm if it is km, kn or mph. Most people don't mind a call about their boat if you are upfront in telling them you want to repower yours. . I don't know much about propping semi planing boats so I would just be using sistership data. Wonder if solas has prop and speed data ? If what you are saying is correct I am not sure throwing HP at it will do a lot as boat is hitting a speed brick wall.
