The heavy vehicle regs in Qld state when you do an oversize load on a truck and trailer over 4.5 tonne the oversize load must not be on the trailer only, to be oversize on the trailer you must have the truck loaded with an oversize load also.
Has anyone been issued a permit to tow an oversize boat that is wider than 2.9m.

Thanks,
TMC.

1. An overwidth boat (trailer > 2.9m) is an indivisible load and special purpose vehicle hence that requirement is not applicable in this type of situation.

2. As long your total vehicle dimesnions (Length/s, Width & Height) are within the appropriate guidelines and the whole rig meets NHVR requirements then you shouldn't have any permit issues especially under 3.5m. Obviously you will be aware of the requirement for full air brakes on the trailer?

3. Are you aware the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NVHR) is responsible for standard laws across all states for vehicles over 4.5t GVM?

My brother used to work National boat freighters and alot of the boat were way bigger than what your talking, he would have to have escorts front and rear andonly be aloud to enter cities at certain times of the night...so geting a permit for your 2.9 shouldn't be a prob.....

Hi Satnav,
Trailers over 4.5 tonne ATM need air brakes, under that weight different regs apply.
Below is straight out of the Queensland Transport website

5.2 Loading requirements - Trucks and trucks hauling one trailer

5.2.1

In instances where only one indivisible article is to be carried, it must be carried on the truck and not on the trailer. This subsection does not apply to a truck hauling a tag trailer.

So what I want to do is tow a 3.1 metre wide boat, weighing 3.5 t with a truck that is over 4.5t GVM. Total length under 19m.

So....what are you asking?, you got a reply, then started quoting laws, not sure what you are after.

"on a truck and trailer over 4.5 tonne"

1. Well you did state a "truck and trailer" over 4.5 tonne but trailer < 4.5t ATM and and truck > 4.5t GVM then all good for normal brake requirements.

2. Doesn't change the indivisible and special purpose vehicle type exemption for over 2.9 wide but less than 3.5 metres, all other things in place you will be good.

From 2007 to 2009 I towed a 9 metre Sailfish cat with a 3.05 metre beam weighing 4 tons with a Landrover Defender. Went down to the cop shop in Mackay asked for a permit which they supplied. Stated I needed signs front and back, flashing light at the back and couldn't tow after hours. From my reading of the rules , if I had a truck with GMC > 4.5 tons I could have towed at night.

Hi Noelm,
I quoted the actual wording because most transport companies let alone the average bloke on the street do not know about that restriction. I spoke to a bloke at a servo with a body truck and trailer who specializes in boat transport and does big boats on the trailer only. I asked how he gets around this law and his reply was "didn't know it existed".
So what I was asking has anyone ever got a permit to do this.
