Sold the yalta now buying a 595 cc outsider have to wait.5months:'(I am just asking if instead of outriggers would it be easier to put some reelax multi mount riggers and 7 foot rods instead of outriggers and the advantages or disadvantages of either option thanks in advance for any input:)

I custom made some rod holders that are bolted to the gunwales, gives me a good spread and no tangles. Il try find a pic for you.

It depends on how many rods you want to use, what you are targetting and what you will be trolling most often?

No need for outriggers for a lot of stuff, but they are certainly handy for some methods and targeted species.

A bit more info for a better answer.

Cheers,
Myles

I run a set of custom home made rod holders similar to the relax ones, I have a 1900 tournament and they spread well. I haveed use them for Spanish with out any problems, just ensure you run a safety lanyard to the reel. I can take a pic if you like?

I think the rod-riggers out fish the outriggers for macks, they don't get that second or two slack line from when the outrigger release operates to when the hook is set by the rod in the holder.

I do the same thing with my 625 Explorer.

This is what I did and it works well. A couple of scraps of Ally hollow bar zip-tied to the targa. Put a bolt through the bottom end, then use whatever you want as an outrigger pole. I use an old 8ft broomstick fishing rod on one side and an old 27meg radio antenna on the other. you can then attach an outrigger clip to the end of the pole and just bring it down to attach your line. It's pretty easy in practice, gets the lines up and out enough for trollling 4 rods. I usually troll skipping gars from the "outriggers" and diving lures or woghead gars from the corners.

Here is a few pics of my rod holders, they fit into the existing rod holders and are removable. I have used them on different boats and had many hook ups without fail. Some times when doing tight turns I lacks band the back rear lines off the ski hooks to keep them low and below the side lines.

G'day Jsmfun,
Outriggers are really most useful for trolling baits, to get the lift needed to skip baits easily, or to get the baits/lures clear of the wake of the boat if it is particularly "dirty", like a cat for instance.
I think for what you are chasing, and for pulling lures, the riggers aren't required and you do get a better hook up rate straight off the rod tip I believe.

Go the rod riggers for that extra bit of spread if you need it. Or if you are having a targa or rocket launcher made, have the outer most holders welded on at 45 degrees to be used when trolling. This will give you a bit of extra height and make some lure types run better.

Good luck with the new boat,
Cheers
Myles

I have used 2 rod extensions for the 2 long corners before I had outriggers on, I even got me 2 of the new reelax extensions to use if I want to go for a quick one, can be used for the shotgun as well from the bait board.
Caught almost everything from the old setup. Make sure that your spread is well positioned and you wont get tangled up.

Nice way to get some extra height do you still use lanyards for your rods

You haven't lived until you've filleted a piece of thigh/lower back on a rod rigger. Those things are lethal.

Most of the time I don't bother. Just to clarify, the fishing rod stays down in the gunnell rod holder. The line is then attached to a pole by a rubber band and put up top. When a fish hits it the band breaks and the line comes away from the pole just like a regular outrigger. I do have a couple of lanyards but I probably need to lose a rod before I use them religiously.

I use http://www.bcf.com.au/online-store/products/Blueline-Boat-Rod-Holder-SS-Side-Mount-Adjustable.aspx?pid=223905&menuFrom=571480#Cross
these with 7' rods and use an occy strap to secure the rod. I run 4 rods and 2 teasers. Hooked small blacks, wahoo and dollys no drama. I trolled both baits and lures. Cheap alternative.
I needed to cut down the screws to clamp it onto the bimini.

For the last couple of summers I didn't even bother taking the poles. Sounds like you are targeting a good meat spread for a nice feed (bar the billies) which is what I do in summer. I only run three rods + teaser (SC + LC +SG) with a Uzi/Fluzi on the SG, Lumo M/sprocket on the LC behind the teaser and a deep dive Halco190/Rapala on the SC. Much easier to put everything away and gives you a bit of a chance on the multiple hook ups to land them all if you come across a pack of razors or dollies/YF. For slow trolling liveys you can beat a D/rigger and if you got a wad of money burning a hole in your pocket I would actually spend my money on that before a set of poles. Actually the best thing to get for trolling before all that would be an autopilot. S1000 is the best thing I have fitted to my boat especially trolling solo.

IMO anymore on a trailer boat, you are cluttering the deck and wasting time actually clearing the deck.

We use a similar type of portable rod holder to the reelax ones when I can't be bothered using the outriggers. Not as good as they don't have the safety clip but still work well.

Have a look at Cisco's as well instead of rod riggers. Far more versatile than rod riggers to optimise lure action coz u can vary height and rod drag angle with about the same spread out the side. Also the cannon dual axis.
Leaves existing flush mounts free and no new 2' holes to cut...can get 2 rod holders and 4 mounts. Raise or lower depending on surface conditions and speed...means more control to maximise lure action at any speed. Can be placed up close to helm/pass or anywhere along gunwhale/transom. Use a lanyard the same as riggers and about the same price as good 316 rod riggers and still detachable to store. Only need 2 and can get 2 extra mounts. On a trailerboat staggering the distances you run the lures back is just as important any spread you create.
Big practical benefit is you can rig and get the lure running over the side then lower the rod to spread...or reach the line by backing the rod holder back to vertical to check the lure/line by hand. beats reaching and pulling out from rod riggers under load. Might suit some better than rod riggers and offer about the same spread.
Found this vid on the Cannon one. Can get them in all sorts of mounts like deck/tube/rail mounts and attach up on the launcher corners and verticals for height on skip baits...2 holders gives a lot of versatility on a trailerboat and no welding..just get mounts as required.
