They move fast and appear very quick , I nearly cleaned up mother and calf a few weeks ago , turned in time and veared left pulled up to make sure they passed ..and they just stopped and put a show on no more than 10 metres off my starboard side , I taped it .beautiful animals...but other than going real steady they are a constant risk , probably more so on anchor ...I was doing 30 knots bow up , Deckie spotted them .
But we see a few every trip .usually they go down as you approach , but being a 4 stroke yammy they wouldn't hear it ..

God Yamaha are good

For those that run the gauntlet in the dark are very much at risk and it's only going to be a matter of time before somebody comes very badly unstuck and they will only have themselves to blame.

Mate of mine hit one on fathers day heading out to tempest, he was doing about 40 km/hr when one surfaced in front of him, he pulled back on the throttle but the tail connected with his bow sprit on the way down. Cost him $80 to replace it but he seems to think the whale only ended up with a score mark on the tail. He says there was no activity in the area that he or his crew had noticed before hand. He hung around to check on the whale but it was on the move and surfaced quite some considerable distance away, he has 3 other friends who have collided with whales over the years so it is not an uncommon occurrence. Two years ago we were heading out of Waddy Point at dawn in slightly choppy conditions when we spotted an unusual swell formation, we passed it by and found it was a whale sleeping on the surface, something I didn't know they did, so it is definitely all eyes open when heading out during the hale season.

I had a very close call with one popping out right in front of me while at speed a few years back, missed it by about 2 meters, on my own 20KM out to sea, gave me the shytes big time. When I see too many whales frolicking around I go home....they are a bloody nuisance to humanity.

Lol, I think we are the nuisance to whaleity

Been going out there for a long time day and night I go very steady in whale and most other seasons and never had an issue. At 20kts they seem to be able to deal with us better and keep out of the way, 25 - 30 kts + is asking for an accident IMHO.
Keeping all eyes out far and wide and go very steady at night. Keep a sharp knife at the ready to cut the line quickly if anchored.
But yeah the way I see boaties roaring along out there it is a wonder there hasn't been more notable collisions.

Have had a few close encounters over the years but the 1 that really put the wind up my sails was when 1 hooked up to my anchor rope and towed me for about 200m nearly had me on the plane by the time I got to the rope through my cabin it flicked its tail and covered me with water and wriggled off the rope

The closest call I have seen apart from nearly running over the sleeping whale was about 5 yeas back off Caloundra, was fishing with a mate and a tinnie was drifting alongside not 20 m away, a whale decided to broach within about 5 m of the tinnie. He was nearly swamped with the water, needless to say he left for shore in a hurry, this occurred just on dusk which would have been even more disconcerting for the tinnie crew.
