What size and length of anchor rope should I have for a 5.7 Cruisecraft, considering overnight anchoring out off 1770 possibly. I am thinking 8mm silver and can get a 200m roll for about $80.The anchor rope currently is about 10mm and 100m.The spare rope on the boat now is 16 mm silver x 100m,got it given to me in a coil brand new, seems overkill in size though. Also making a bigger reef pick. I would hate to go to sleep in the boat at Musgrave and wake up in Samoa:o

It really does depend on how heavy your boat is. Length of chain connected to anchor and anchor weight and type. Ideally I would stick with the 10mm just for that added extra safety.

I'd probably be looking at 20mm thick rope at a bare minimum to be honest mate............

Shit for anchoring but no Honda should leave shore without a good tow rope...........

Anthony have you ordered your fuel barge for refuelling that Yamy when you get to the reefs??

Probably 10 mm as a minimum. As you may know from SS I use 12 mm for anchoring as its nice on the hands and 10 mm for long loops and stuff like that.

Cheers

Sarcasm is angers ugly brother, but then again sarcasm is one of my many talents lol I seem to remember VMR throwing you a tow rope at 1770,was it 20mm ?

Chimo
I do now remember that conversation, bad memory.

what length of rope do you need for out off 1770,I imagine where you would anchor overnight to sleep would only be shallow near a reef.

Giffo

No idea on anchoring at the island to which you refer but I don't believe in short lengths of rope instead I am more inclined to favour letting out enough (3 to 5 times the depth) to anchor and having a heap more in the boat that can be let out if required. As man you must agree that the minimum of anything is just not in our language!

Giffo I have 200m of 10mm on mine but rarely use the anchor. Oh if you do end up in Samoa we can have a beer. I will be there the week after the M&G!

If you are overnighting off 1770, many people will stay in the lagoons inside Fitzroy Reef or Lady Musgrave Is. In which case, you will use the mooring buoys, not the anchor. A 12mm docking rope will do the trick very nicely and can be bought already made up for about $20 from chandleries.

If you were anchoring behind the reef, on that size boat, i'd go 10mm at least. Just as important would be chain of about 5m, and a decent anchor as well.

Ihave a 6mtr platey n i use 12mm rope with chain the length of the rig attatched to a Mooloolaba pick...
Its said the length of the chain should be the length of your rig but then again you dont want chain that gunna be a pain to light either..

If it makes you feel safer take a spare rope and chain. You can't be to careful.

those reefs like to keep anchors so my choice is a cheap 5 prong anchor filled with lead with 10mm rope. everytime i fished there i came in close to anchor so max 40metres so used about 100metres of rope max.that was on a 6.5mtr boat

set your gps anchor lock and it will let you know if you have moved

Giffo, I'd have chain at least the length of your boat, that makes a huge difference. Not sure about the rope though!

I had no idea there were mooring bouys in the lagoon,so I should be Ok with what I have, have spare chain, anchor and rope.Never been this far from dry land, but never had big enough boat to do it either. This time next week, boat will be packed and ready to go to 1770 next day woohoo.

What's the story with the mooring bouys in the lagoon - are they public (anyone can use) or private/leased etc.

I will just anchor in one of the live wells of the big Yank boats at the M&G, no problems !

I thought Musgrave only had private moorings but I am probably wrong, there are a couple of private moorings in Fitzroy as well as the public ones, the charter guys tend to get upset if you hook up to theirs.

3 sleeps to go....

Giffo, 10mm is good.
I suggest that you carry two reef anchors, 2 sets of chain and enough rope to anchor in double the max depth.
That way if you lose a set you are not stuck out there unable to anchor.

You can leave the prongs of the spare reef anchor unfolded for easier storage. (Folding the prongs is a subject in itself, am happy to make suggestion re that and supply handy tool)

Given the low weight and cost of such items, it is better to carry a whole spare set rather than risk ruining such a big exciting trip.

From memory last year there are no public bouys in Musgrave lagoon, white marker bouys were not for use, may have changed. i anchored in about 25ft on sand with a sand anchor between 2 bommies, that way if it let go badly at least i wouldnt loose the boat just the anchor(35 knot southerly for 2 days made it interesting sleeping in the tent hoping our boat is still there).Good length of chain is a great idea.

Giffo,

no need for spares, if you loose an anchor there will be that many boats out there surely someone will let you tie off the stern of one of them for the night.

One thing you don't need is excess weight!

I use 10mm nylon on my 2400 Kevlacat with 8m of 8mm chain, no problems anchoring around Heron island or Sykes reef.
