View Full Version : Retrofit tilt assist on 2000 BF25A Honda four-stroke outboard?

I've been looking at aftermarket tilt and trim systems for my tinnie, as my outboard can be hard to shift (not as strong as I used to be, I suppose). However, I didn't really want to spend the money (around $1000 for some of them).

However, I saw a Honda tilt assist unit on ebay pretty cheap, supposedly good working condition, but my manual tells me that these were only fitted on the BF35 and up.

Does anyone know if this will fit the BF25A? Spaniardking will know :), but I wondered if anyone had ever done it?

Hi Mate

I can't help you for sure, however I think what you are asking may be possible. In 2002 I bought a 12' alloy boat with a second hand 15 johnson that I knew the history of. I have cerebral palsy and could not manually lift the 15. A friend of mine worked for mercury marine and had just finished reading up on these little power tilt units that could be fitted to small engines up to 25hp, so I purchased one and he modified and fitted it and it was still working fine when I traded the boat in 2007. The cost was about $1100 as you say, but it was well worth it, just for the independence side of things.

I am at Redland Bay if your ever looking for a mid week fishing & or crabbing buddy. My current boat is simillar to yours at 4.25m with a 30 Yamaha 4 stroke.
Cheers

Peter , you wont be able to retrofit any genuine trim, or trim assist unit as the mounting brackets are significantly different, best bet is the CMC unit which is not cheap as you know.

Peter, I have a CMC unit fitted to a 30hp Johnson 2 stroke and find it is excellent. I got mine direct from the USA a couple of years ago for a bit over $500, delivered.

Thanks, gents. I figured that might be the case. I guess I'll have to save up, but $500 sure sounds better than $1100. Any hints on where it came from for that price?
