repowering as it is just not big enough for the boat. there is a long story behind it and how we came to the situation, but that can wait until another day.

the question is, how much is a reasonable price to advertise it for to move it reasonably quickly? It is of no value sitting on a stand in the shed.

Had it out on the river yesterday, runs well starts nicely, just wont push a 5.3m ally cat faster than 25 knots. Will be sold with controls, cables and gauges.

Let me know if there is anyone chasing something along these lines. it is still on the boat, so a water test is possible in the next couple of weeks, but after that, it will be on a stand. Located in Canberra

cheers

Sorry off topic just a smidge , but what pitch prop and RPM are you getting at WOT ?.

Sorry off topic just a smidge , but what pitch prop and RPM are you getting at WOT ?.

It's pulling 5500rpm at wot, but it is fitted to a 5.3m plate Mako cat, nowhere near big enough. Transom is rated to 180hp, he sorta knew it wasn't going to be big enough, wot saw 25.1 knots on still salt water. Needed 4800 rpm to maintain 20 knots. Have arranged a 115 to replace it with, will make it a good bay boat.

Honestly don't think we could throw a prop at it and pick up the other 8 to 10 knots needed to make it a workable proposition.

A combination of events meant that the planned pre-purchase water test didn't happen as planned, and 700 k's from home, no accrued leave, took the word of the builder that it would do 30 knots. Will write up the whole story when the saga is finished. Lessons to be learnt, but my mate had his mind set on the hull, and we had discussed future course of action to address the issue before he set off.

We tested it in the estuary, and even lifted the engine one hole in the car park to get it to 25.1 knots and cav plate exactly wzhere it is supposed to be. At the end of the day, it is just too small for the hull it is bolted to. BMT weighed in at 1320kg, on an ally trailer. The 75 is just not big enough if he wants to go outside.

Have done a deal on a 115 Opti that should make all the difference.

I think I'd be fitting a chain and turnbuckle setup to that trailer before I was much older too!

yes, what he said! even though that Merc have a kind of red band, do NOT be confused with a "proper" red band that is as old as the hills now.

You may be right, my terminology may be wrong, the plate on it says 2003.

Ha ha ha what a great thread i was going to say 300 bucks for the motor and why did you put a 1980's motor on a new boat but i thought i would be polite and say nothing :)

The best you get these days for those old 2 strokes is say 3k with low hours and great condition. the reason is you can get a new 4stroke or an etec for 10K and second hand they go for 5k so it pushed the price of your motor down quite alot. That said the old two strokes are bloody good enginges and make for fantastic buying if your on a budget.

Acknowledged, my mate bought the package as he liked the hull with full expectation of having to repower it. The engine is the minimum rating for the hull, with max being 180hp. The builder fitted the engine.

At this stage it is what it is, and it looks like he will end up with a brand new package with a 115 fitted in the mid to late 20's with a bit of mucking about, and he seems happy with that.

Wirlybird is on the money if its tidy. I would think most buyers will be looking for PTT to be fine ( not slowly lowering itself ) oil injection still hooked up, good spark and compression min 115psi in each cyl.

If it does all that i think 3k is reasonable, they were a real good powerhead those 3 cyl's.

With Spring not too far away its not hard to find some goose who has not used there boat in a while and neglect things like impellers and fry motors and are then on the lookout for a budget repower.

Have not done the compression test, but all other criteria met, trim and tilt is fine, oil injection still original, suspect that it has not done a lot of work, but cannot say for sure. Starts nicely, idles, runs to WOT max revs as it is setup, just not big enough. Will pass the opinions along and let him sort it.

Does your mate have anyone with a bigger motor to test out for the weekend?

i know you think 25knots isnt good enough but that may be the hulls top speed in terms of stability so any faster and it may be just like riding a bucking bull.

i had a 20foot boat once that had a 100hp on it and it got a max speed of 30 knots but i mostly did 15-20 knots as that was its comfortable speed.

My mate had the exact same boat with a 175hp on the back and man it was worse due to sitting in the water deeper all the time it drove him crazy till he drove my boat and down sized his outboard. incidentally his top speed was 38 knots.

The 75 is the minimum rated for the hull, it is pulling 4800 rpm at 20 knots, and definitely not enough grunt to follow a decent wave. Hull is rated to 180hp, only going up to a 115 with expectations of 30knots wot, the equivalent is a Webster twin fisher in the 5.2 and most of those are fitted with a 115. Not looking for overkill, but enough to travel in some slop when needed. We had a 115 4 stroke on a quinnie 540, using that as a benchmark for performance, this hull is 140 kg heavier, but is a cat.
