View Full Version : Vessel & Operator requirements

This is probably a case of when not if and something that many will howl about but will no doubt become a requirement in due course

1. How far offshore or in some cases along the shore should a (generic type) single engine vessel be confined and to what length?

2. Similar with a twin engine vessel, operational confines etc?

3. What should be the skippers qualifications for say inshore and offshore?

4. What additional safety and survival equipment should be included?

I have no idea why everyone gets all hung up on this single engine business, all sorts of boats(and ships) operate all over he world with only one engine, same goes for size, there is plenty of small boats that are perfectly OK operating well offshore, similarly there is plenty f big boats that would be useless offshore, regardless of how far offshore.

10000. Why should we answer your post?

10001. I am sick of being over regulated!

How about boats with no motors (kayaks)???
Should we also avoid towing the boat to the ramp in case we have a car accident??
Maybe we should ban boating all together because something might break down and we could perish.

Going to bed can be bad for you too;

1 Short period risk STDs

2 Long stays can also be bad ie bed sores

3 And so on

4 There is a lot that can be said for natural selection too. (If you go and kill yourself, maybe it was deserved. If you go out with someone who may kill you, did you deserve what you got?)

5 I tend to agree with Garry on this

Cheers

1. is the earth flat?

2. will a single engine power off the edge?

3. will a dual engine power further off the edge?

4. what noise will it make?

5. will the edge get picked up on radar?

6. will the sounder still work after it goes off the edge?

That Thor fellow took a boat the same as mine all the way to Japan so I'll say Japan for now. Not that I want to go to Japan so I might just turn around and head straight back.

JT might never want or be physically able to leave my boat when I finally entrap him on board so he can come too. No wonder he's scared. He'll be eating pigeons for days on end which may require a boat load of bum wipes I've heard.

1. Now if this was a yachting site then the comaprison might be valid but obviously it's not. Most with any understanding will be thinking in the right context re this particular site and the typical vessels people on this site use.

2. As for the single v twin argument, quite valid really for those that do go a long way in small vessels. Then again maybe tripples or quads will spin off from the US

I think that SatNav needs to move to Sth Africa. They have the type of regulations over there that appeals to him. Over there if you are going more than 15 miles offshore you must have
1. 2 motors
2. twin battery setup or if on single must be able to power electronics for 12hrs without power
3.emergency steering
4. must have VHF and radio telephone
5.Space Blankets x2
6.Spares and Tools "Adequate for the purpose of carrying out emergency repairs to
machinery and essential equipment aboard. "
7.Marking of Trailer, "Where any vessel is launched from a trailer other than a dolly at a private launching site the trailer must be marked in a conspicuous position, with the vessel’s name, or approved marking and with the owner’s name and emergency contact number. "
8.Marking of Safety Equip. "All life-jackets, buoyancy aids, life-buoys, Dan-buoys, flares, oars, paddles and life-rafts are to be permanently marked with the vessel’s name or “approved marking”
9.Watertight capsize bottle attached to vessel with rope readily accessible in event of capsize Containing flares, survival and emergency equipment. The rope length must not be less than 1.5 times the length of the vessel and manufactured to be non-slip.

Here's my answers (you can copy them if you want too SatNav - seeing how you only seem to have questions but no answers!):

1. Offshore, I would say 250 Nautical Miles offshore from Mainland Australia and Tasmania. Why, because that's where the insurance cover on my boat expires.

2. 250 Nautical Miles offshore ....... See answer 1.

3. This is an easy one ...... Recreational Boat Licence!

3. Whatever safety gear is required by the state you are in and any additional safety equipment you deem necessary.

See ..... how easy was that!

As a group we have the numbers to make some noise in a petition. We all would like a bit of extra security with being in contact with VMR and coast guard when we head to those minimal signal fishing grounds that we all are addicted to fishing. Why don't we get together and voice our concerns in writing to get our government to upgrade or add additional towers on offshore shipping channel markers or islands to bounce our signals back to home base. We do live in a world of technology so this shouldn't be a hard task. Yes their might be cost involved in doing so but isn't a life worth every cent.. If someone on here has the means or contacts to start a petition please feel free to organise this.

how about instead of spending money on useless laws and big payouts you use the money to fix all the pot holes out in the ocean?
surely you think we as a nation are that stupid to believe it, and maybe we are, did we not vote for Gillard.

All boaties should take up the hobby BEFORE they have had kids.

That way the stoopid ones will be weeded out of the gene pool and the rest of us can just get on with it, without worrying too much about endless regulations.
