I've got a 94 model Mariner 150 2 stroke and want to know what oil you guys recommend for it? I'm particularly interested in reducing the fumes it produces. Its had the oil injection system removed and I'm running 50 to 1.
Anyone got any suggestions to moderate the fumes? Thanks.

Apart from fitting a 4 stroke I wouldn't think there is any way of reducing that succulent sweet smell from a 2 stroke mixed in with an old bit of squid and pilchard wafting up from bilge. Makes you feel like you really are out fishing. ;D

PS, sorry, I use Castrol. Yep smelly, but going ok. 1983 115hp Erude.

I had an outboard mechanic do a pre purcahse check yesterday (on an OMC 70hp) and he was saying only use Yamalube, or another one I cant remember the name of. He said to steer clear of Nulon and Castrol.

That's a bit scary, stay away from Castrol. Did he say why to stay away from those oils.

As SummerTrance can attest, we have a beautiful 1984 60 horse Jonno pushing a 16ft deHavilland ally that runs EXTREMELY well...and we have always used Valvoline NMMA TC-W3 Synthetic Enhaced Marine Oil.

Cheers, Ray & Kerri.

When he said about that I was processing all the other info he had just given me about the motor (which was basically that it wasnt a good buy) so I didnt take it all in too well.

But, I think it was something about those oils draining away from the bearing quicker and providing less protection. The motor I had him look at, had a top bearing noise, and the bloke had been using Nulon.

From someone who uses Yamalube, you aren't going to get rid of the smell using it.

Have always liked Valvoline oils and used them exclusively in our cars back in the 70-80-90. Have not tried the outboard oils but will look into them.

Apparently people are having good results using the evinrude E-tec oil in their conventional 2 bangers..........unlike the people having bad results actually using E-tec's that is.

I use Caltex (50-60 litres a year), only because it's the cheapest I can get. Caltex is supposed to supply Yamalube. Used Yamalube and it does seem about the same. The best I have tried is Merc Quicksilver, but not enough to offset the price.

I don't mind the fumes though. My mate blames the fumes on my boat when he gets sick, but when he gets sick on his four stroke powered boat it's not the fumes?

If you're referring to fumes while trolling/going slowly then premixing instead of having the oil injection is what's hurting you here. Instead of the motor supplying petrol:oil at ratios of 100:1 at slow speeds it's always 50:1 which is good for lubrication right up to WOT. I use Quicksilver/Mercury Premium Plus in my 30hp 2s @ 50:1 premix and it doesn't smoke much but if you're travelling slowly yes it does smell, at speed no smoke or smell and when you do figure of 8s to purposely test your own exhaust fumes then the smell is not unpleasant at all as most of the fuel/oil has burnt. If oil cost is a huge factor for you then this oil may be prohibitive for you, try some of the brands others have recommended/had good results with in that case or try to source oil in bulk if you go through a lot.

I have a 1990 mariner 150 2 stroke and I have the original owners manual etc from when purchased new and it states for optimum performance and best results to use quicksilver oils. Ive been using quicksilver in my 40 merc and cant complain will be using quicksilver when my mariner is back on my boat also

Thanks for everyone's replies! I'm going to try the quicksilver premium. I actually LOVE the 2 stroke smell (only diesel is better! ), but crew and family are susceptible to sea sickness. The test trip out on Friday was in flat calm conditions and the smell was really quite overpowering.
Thanks again for everyone's input.

I have used both quicksilver premium and valvoline in my pre-mix 175 merc, I couldn't notice any difference. I had to change to valvoline as its more readily available in Mackay on weekends especially.

Found the same as Rob above. I noticed a difference, but not enough to warrant the extra price. Caltex distributors have a winter special in my area of 20lt for $120-130 each year.

A couple of things to make life a bit more pleasant,
When launching and starting take note of the wind direction and turn the boat into the wind if you can.
Always pull up when idling facing side on or into the wind if possible.
When trolling with the wind, just tack a little to avoid the fumes.

You can avoid a lot of the fumes with some thought and have a good day with the family.
