Repowering 1980 cruise craft reef ranger

I am replacing the transom, floor and possibly stringers in my 1980 model cruise craft reef ranger and repowering with an updated outboard. I have been looking around the 135hp to 150hp range. Does any one else have a reef ranger with a similar hp outboard and would a 200hp outboard still be okay, as I have seen some for sale at a resonable price. Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks Craig.

I think if you are going to replace it with a two stroke, anything from a 130hp-150hp should be ok. A four stroke maybe a Zuke 140hp but no bigger than a 175hp. I think from memory a Reef Ranger is a 18 footer so a 175hp should be good.

I think 200hp would be too much. I also seem to recall they were good with around 130hp, so I agree with Duckfish, in a modern engine the 140 Zuke might be a good choice.

I have just got a 1983 Explorer 5.7 with a 130 Honda on it and it seems to go fine with this motor,have not had a huge load in it though,only 100lt fuel and 2 blokes.Where are you located ?

Giffo, the reef ranger is 5.5m and would be very similar in weight to your explorer. I will ring spaniard king tomorrow about his 135 honda. I am located at capalaba. cheers

I have a 150 on mine and it gets up and goes very well. 40 knots flat out easily with a 4 blade prop.

I had a 120 2stk on mine and it went very well (though mostly one up) I would think a 140 4stk would be perfect (oh i wish i still had the beast....would be perfect for my current location). 200 would be waaaay overpowered and too heavy as they are already heavy in the arse (i mounted my batteries up front to distribute the weight better).
