View Full Version : Fibreglass boat fix up

I bought a small glass boat recently that had some damage to the keel, convinced myself the motor and trailer were worth the money paid regardless of damaged hull.

So the saga begins...not to bore people, I have been working on the boat for the last 6 weeks so this is the quick version of progress.

I began with the keel repair and I must say with a bit of advice fibre glassing was not as scary as I thought. Keel repaired and time to strip the paint off.

The boat had been painted with God knows what (maybe acrylic house paint) and was an absolute mission to get off. Luckily there was nothing hiding under the paint to be scared of. I was told the transom had been repaired which turned out to be true (was very happy at that stage). I put another 4 layers of glass over the transom just to make sure.. it's about 55mm thick now.. should be ok for a small boat 8-).
Now the bogging and fairing starts, don't want to be doing that again in a hurry if you know what I mean, lots of resin and Q cells.

Then some sanding and sanding and sanding. Did I say sanding oh more sanding..

Finally this weekend got some primer on it, looks ok. Shouldn't be too far away from some colour and test to see if it floats.

If anyone knows the make of hull I would love to know.

Nice work. Sorry, can't really help you with her make, but looks to have nice lines.

Once you do the inside she will be great. So good luck with the rest of the project and keep the progress reports coming!

Thanks guys.

Hopefully the progress reports will come a bit quicker. I'm very keen to give it a test run once top coated before attacking the inside. Got some good ideas at the tinnie and tackle show for layouts, the x country boats have a good fit out for a small boat.

Hello Adam_G,
My guess on make is Pongrass.
Look up Pongrass on Boatpoint.
Curved hull between chine and keel.
Large keel, large chine lips and a single crease in the topsides.
Designed by Frank Bailey, who wrote a small reference book about boat design.
Circa 1970's
More pictures would help.

Well I have been bit slack but the boat is finally painted and looks pretty good. I ended up with a few runs in a couple of spots which really p!ssed me off so the boat is staying right where it is upside down till I can fix them. If I don't fix them it will shit me every time I look at it.

Bit hard to get a good pic while it is in the shed but you will get the idea.
