I would call it for a male longfin perch Caprodon longimanus

On second thought, has similar coloring to a gold spot.

phantomfisher is on the money.

''Females plain pink; males becoming yellow spotted, especially on head and fins and large black area on dorsal fin. offshore reefs and islands. mainly seamounts and along walls, feeds midwater, sometimes rising to shallow depths for zooplankton but rarely in depths less than 25m. Called Pink Maomao in NZ''

rtp, thanks but I don't think it is one of those as i have caught quite a few and that was my original thought but the tail is the wrong shape, the gold spot is missing, and the wriggley yellow lines around the head shouldn't be there as well as the shape of the mouth.

edit: should read all of the replies first as phantophisher answere it already.

It is a Long Finned Orange Sea Perch as far as I know and the one in the pic looks like a male. Quite acceptable on the table too.

oops should have read phantoms post ::)

Not a pigfish, they usually have two feelers from the lower jaw (probably not actually feelers and someone will correct me I'm sure), looks sort of similar to a goatfish though in colour. I agree with Phantom, male longfin perch. Looks yummy.

Hey yeah, nice boat too, hope he takes me out again when he gets back from touring the country and of course one of those nice Sea Perch caught that day as well.

nah, the goat fish are the ones with the barbels, but goldspot pigfish have a less elongated body shape than other pigfish.

Cheers, Rob

Black spot pig fish-- member of Wrasse family.

For your mate lethal so he knows what a pigfish is.
