I have a 2Str 15HP Yamaha and want to fit a rectifier to charge a small 12v Battery on extended trips.

Thing is the Yamaha part is around $100.
Now I was thinking could I just go to Jaycar and get a simple bridge rectifier ($4.00), which in theory would give me pulsating DC. Could I then use a capacitor and resistor to give me a flat DC output to charge the battery?

Unless it has changed, that rectifier option for around $100 is the best value outboard accessory, ever. Totally under-rated and unkown to many.
I had one on my 50 Yammy.
I suggest you get it done properly and enjoy the peace of mind.
Save your caps and resistors for Xmas lights.

Buy the genuine or youll be doing it again saltwater and electronics are not friends.
Just my 2 cents.

I think you are correct. Although $100 is a lot of money (5 weeks worth of fuel for my car) its best to do it right the first time.
