I was down at Victoria point Jetty (where the ferry drops off), trying to catch a few pike I soon gave up as there was none there, then out in the distance about 40 meters (pretty close) surfaces a Dugong!

Been here hanging round the water from time to time for over 6 years now and have never seen one, I thought they were just a myth that appears on tourist signs.

Well I suppose that is the greenie in me, but mostly its great to see something like that because it is a good indicator of a reasonably healthy system.

Hey dan , I to had been around the bay quite a bit and hadn,t seen any, one day off the maroon banks drifting for whiting one surfaced right under my tinny and scare the .. out of me, when I settled down I saw heaps of them, and in about a 20 minute period about 80-100 estimated, swam under ,around and past me in crystal clear water, man what a sight. Didn,t catch any fish that day and couldn,t have cared less. Since then, and admitadely I fish a lot more I have seen large numbers up close like this, as well as small numbered groups cruising by.......pretty awesome creatures and really not shy about getting close to boats cheers, roy

I used to see them 30 years ago in Moreton Bay when I had a yacht.

Haven't seen one in this past year of having a power boat or the ten years previous of power boating with my mate.

Was wondering if they still were around. Glad to see they are.

A few years back we were skurfing on the outside of the T'looma wrecks (was meidweek we were wagging uni and had the place to ourselves). My mate was on the board, I was observing and mate 2 was driving. MAte falls off and we're coming around to pick him up again and we watch as a dugong surfaces right next to him. The head must have only been a foot or two away from his. He damn near jumped clear of the water and into the boat from about 20m away. Made this squialy-gurgly-whimpery (yep all at once) noise as he thrashed the water around him into a lather - his eyes as big as dinner plates. Needless to say me and mate2 were absolutely pissing ourselves. For minutes. He was treading water, screaming for us to pick him up but we weren;t capable of doing anything we were laughing so hard. Was possibly the funniest thing I've ever seen. Got him back to the 'mothership' parked inside the wrecks and he was still shaking an hour and 3/4 bottle of Bundy later.

Needless to say he's copped just a bit of shite ever since. Anytime the 3 of us get into a boat together (which sadly isn't often enough as we all got older and spread out - geographically you cruel buggers, geographically) there's always at least one good ribbing session about 'Guido the killer dugong'. The recollection by me and mate2 was (i'm told) a highlight of mates wedding speeches.

Seen plenty of them in and around the Rouse channel (hence the go slow zones). I've had them scare the s#!t out of me on a quiet morning when they surface beside the boat.

Always a nice sight especially if the fishing is slow, we actually went looking for them around the go slows several times with no luck until about the fourth time we came across a "herd" i guess of at least 50, passing in front of and under us, very cool.

Wow, yeah great posts and some great photos (nice photos) and stories (funny as), as also some guys who have seen whole pack of them (never knew they got around in such numbers).
It's just something that is great to see, for me it was a first.

Yeah MRD, bloody interesting about the huge pack of them (pod? School? Herd? what do you call a mob of dugong - anyone know?). I wouldn;t have thought there were enough in moreton bay to make a herd(?) of 100. Would be a spectacular sight.

Good to see, but don't say it too loud, you will get another marine park. ;D

That explains why I haven't seen them I guess.... I am not going to the right places. Thanks for the info... I will make a trip there hoping to see them now.

See plenty down near the Sandhills up to shark point. It is a pity that people don't follow the go slow zoning that has been in place - gees there are some clowns zooming around at high speed there.

Seen a few of em in the bay swallows. usually nice an quite but i did see one having a hard time with one of bigger tigers i have seen ( in the bay or anywhere else for that matter) an amazing amount of blood in the water and then a huge pack of schoolies moved in for a feed. ...... Mother nature is very unforgiving when your slow and juicy.
