Just a thought. Found this motel to be friendly, easy going and they cook a lovely meal, especially the fish. Every room also has a view over the pool and out into the bay around Bowen. Other beauty is there is a good boat ramp not too far away in town, and you are away from the baddies in town, no problems such as theft and breakins. Walk across the highway and you can throw a line in. I've often towed my boat up and down the Qld coast and found difficulty pulling into a suitable motel when tired. If you are passing through Bowen, this motel is just south of Bowen on the highway . Its right beside the information centre and big mango, and opposite the rest area. The beauty of this motel is they have around 10 acres of land to park the boat or truck. Also, the owner, old Col, owns a 50ft alloy power catamaran, and is close in the know of local fishing grounds or someone who can head you in the right direction and provide some gps marks. He has family and friends who are closely associated with the more professional industry and should be able to get some good fishing spots. His catamaran isnt a charter vessel, but it is skippered by experts, and if one should stay at the motel long enough and become well aquainted with the owner, there is every possibility of being invited out to a fishing trip to the reef if they are heading out. Again, it isnt for charter, its a mates only type of affair, and operated as a private vessel.
Bowen is one of the few places where you can still go out with the chance of catching a fish or two. There are reef areas nearby where even coral trout can be caught, and there are a couple of islands nearby with fringing reef, such as Stone Island in the bay, southern cross reef just off Kings Beach, and further out you have Middle Island about 10nm ou as well as Gloucester Island, Holbourne Island is about 20nm out.
The boat ramp at the harbour is great during the week, plenty of parking, a bit more popular on the weekend, but a lot better than Airlie Beach for parking and access. Anyway, just ask Col when you get here, or ask the on duty manager to meet Col to get some local fishing information.
