Hi, so I'm going to do these upgrades: http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=36.0

Just wondering how to achieve this?: check the maximum drag at strike before losing free spool. you should be able to get at least 20 pound. this particular reel was able to get 26 pound of drag at strike before freespool was lost. when backed off to 12 pound of drag at strike, the freespool time was 60 seconds.

thanks.

I just changed the drag washer to graphite and it improved the performance of the reel (and lubricated as per Alan's instructions). This real is now used for trolling. For the bigger handle and stronger frame I went to the Tyrnos and Saratogas.

I have never measured drag as real life fishing means I'm forever changing strike drag depending on the target and where it is and whether it is trolled vs dropped vs floated. Using 50lb braid I have skull dragged big sharks to the boat so they take a fair bit of punishment.

The smaller Tyrnos (12/16) handle works best as its only a little longer than the original TLD. It improves the reel out of sight. I'm happy with my existing drag but the carbon upgrade would be a definite improvement

I get my carbon drags from smooth drag.com as they are cheap, efficient and respond to emails. Also they are all over Tani's site to answer questions if needed.

Hey Nicko,

I read it as saying you need to dial up the drag (not the lever - the drag dial) until you no longer have freespool and see what your "strike drag" is then - which he's saying you should have at least 20lbs of drag at that point. Then back off the drag dial until strike drag is 12 pounds and time your freespool.

Just remember to have the drag at the right point when you adjust the dial (at freespool from memory??)

Hope that helps.

Moffy.

Nicko,

If you do the drag upgrade just be careful the graphite frames do crack 5kg of drag is getting up there

A dumb question maybe.

How do you time your freespool?

Never. It's just got to spin. It is not a casting reel.
