Hi All,
Looking at taking the missus and kids to 1770 and out to the islands over xmas and new years with the weather permitting.
I have not been up there before except for a charter trip and few years back.
We would plan a 3 day trip on the boat.
Just looking for any advise on spots to fish, snorkel etc. Where to park the 4x4?
Can you get on the islands? Do you need permits etc?
Basically any advise that may help make the trip easier and more enjoyable.
Thanks in advance.
Dale

Nice place to visit.

Fishing can be done all around most islands or reefs. Be aware there are Green Zones about. There is usually a feed to be had east of Musgrave at

S23 52.340.................... E152 27.781

Troll for mackerel and bottom fish for Sweetlip, Hussar, Moses Perch and Cod.

Snorkeling is best , IMO, inside Fitzroy Lagoon and Musgrave Lagoon.

Permits are required to camp on Musgrave Island.

http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/capricornia-cays/camping.html#lady_musgrave_island

Fairfax and Hoskyn islands are in a Green Zone and access is limited.

Parking your car at the boat ramp is secure.

Check the weather forecast as summer will be hard to find 3 days of good weather.

Be aware, it is 52k's to Musgrave Island from the bar, it is 72k's to Fitzroy Lagoon from the bar.

The channel is very shallow just after the ramp between the first and second green beacons. Stick to the Greens, as the rocks jut into the channel on the reds. NO beacons or markers are lite, so traveling at night in the estuary is difficult.

There is a 6knot speed limit from the ramp to Monument Point and water police will patrol this area.

Please log on and off with Marine Rescue Round Hill... VHF 81, 82. Tell them you are an Ausfish member, and they will keep your details for future reference.

Enjoy..............

Lucky Phill,
Thanks for all the information. Very much appreciated.
Have booked 2 nights on Musgrave being the 26th and 27th of Dec. If weather gods play the game we may stay a third on the boat.
We plan to snorkel Musgrave and Fitzroy.
Weather looks ok at the moment.
Really appreciate the marks, hope to stretch the arms of the kids on a few fish. We dont eat alot of fish so most will be catch and release.
Any tips on anchoring in the lagoon.
Can i run a second anchor to the beach, or just anchor and use a kayak to get to and from the boat?
Thanks again.
Dale

Kayak to and from the beach in the lagoon. Xmas is the nesting season for the Green and Loggerhead turtles on the island. Be sure to call in to the Qld Turtle Research team on the island for more information. Jim and Ann Buck have been doing research on the island for over 20years camping there with volunteers. If you see them can you pass on my wishes for xmas and the new year please.
