A live, just legal sized tailor works for me in the salt.

Agree - tailor, live yellowtail pike, live medium mullet (which stay alive forever) and they love luderick too. They also love fresh squid although they don't survive as a live bait.

we actually find large green prawns are best for black jewfish. But really it depends where you are from and each individual fisherman or boat will generally use a standard bait set which they don't vary from much.
I personally catch most of my fish on prawns most reef fisho's wouldn't ever use prawn.

If you are short of live bait and can get your hands on a greasy mackerel, knock a nice chunk off it and set it away with a mustad bait holder No 3 or 4.
Nice bait for river fishing, gets results, leaves a nice smell trail.
Don't freeze it or it will go soft and fall apart on the hook, has to be fresh, or at least not frozen.

Some fish shops have em.
