Came across this photo from years ago we never found out what is was.
It has clear facial blotching and a concave head(like barra).
To me in looks very distinctly like nothing I have ever seen.
Caught 104km East of roslyn out on reef bommie 24mtrs deep fish is 520mm long.
ANY IDEAS???85874

Looks very much like a jack to me apart from the concave head. Some sort of lutjanus. Ben

Thats a fish we get out wide up here off Cairns on often occasions that is simply called Dusky Snapper,( DPI Website) looks a cross between a LM Nannygai and a Jack.

Odes the ones I have seen up this way are the Dark Tailed Sea perch.

The one above could be one of those. It looks very similar.

Daintreeboy, Yes It is simalar isnt it. The thing I notice about the Dusky is that is has a scooped out forehead like a barra in kind. Thats what lead me to finally think it was a Dusky. In any case the dusky Snapper is not good to eat.

On another note, we got some cracker Long nose out wide last Fri night in 60 metres and look at the red head on this thing! Ive eaten a lot of Long nose over the years and they have been delicious and tender, but these were like old boot, so tough.
