Hi all

Just a quick question for the Lake Somerset regulars.Apart from the obvious fact of looking a bit out of place is there any reason why I wouldn't be able to take my 24ft boat out to Somerset?
It's been a couple of years since I've been out there and remembering the ramp at the spit and all that was pretty good but in saying that I had a smaller boat at that stage and wasn't really looking for things that could inhibit a larger boat.
I'm just looking at taking a couple of people up there for their first time and maybe just pull a tube around or something.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

No reason what so ever. Good concrete ramps and plenty of water in the dam. You will need a boat permit and if fishing you will need a permit for self which includes a partner. All the regs are available on the net.
Cheers.

I also can't see why you can't take your 24 footer up there, would give all the spectators something much bigger & better to look at than all the low line ski-boats, Im planning on going up there with wife & son in toe over xmas with our Polycraft 4.8mt Cuddy.

Do you need a permit to catch redclaw?

One thing to consider is that the ramps are fairly shallow angle mainly set up for low sitting ski boat trailers.

But it is freshwater so no real issue with dunking the back of the vehicle a bit.

Wasn't there today or yesterday when we launched and retrieved. saw her screaming back across from Straddy when we had our weigh in at the fishing club. I reckon she will be right at home rumbling across Somerset. Wouldn't sound out of place thats for sure.

Geez, for that sort of money i would expect the cabin to myself, red emperor and coral trout for dinner and a full time skipper!

No permit required to set pots. The dam is patrolled on a regular basis, so you would need your rods, nets etc stowed away really well.
PS or leave it at home.

Just out of curiosity........

Who would be interested in a sort or a Get Together out at Somerset say maybe a week or so this side of X-Mas.
Kind of more along the lines of a bit of a family day, bring the kids and missus kind of BBQ, redclawing expedition, dam exploring trip/day thingie?
Just a thought......

We would be keen for a weekender up there I usually have to put the patrol in the water up to the tow bar to float the boat off at the spit, Kirkliegh is a bitch of a ramp it is wort the extra tow time to go to the spit.

Well if you want to make it say week of 14th November that will work well I can loan you a 5.5mt bow rider get the girlies up front with their bikinis on have skis and tube you can take and cause I'm a fancy mofo has a 10 inch sub and kick ass tunes. Shit I'm that good of a bloke I will even throw in a 12v pump so you don't have to blow anything up (leave that up to this Arab). And a socket to plug it into. If your real nice I will even fit the ski prop on and supply ski jackets. (All this crap and I can't ski for shit)
I will have to throw in a tow vehicle as yours will be somewhat else where (just sayin) And I'm not that far from somerset.
And perry could finally see what a sonic hub does if youse have a m&g.
Wins all round.

Yep you camp there. People tend to leave the boats in the water.

The weekends tend to be busy with water skiers and jetskiers getting pissed and making asses of them selves in my experience.
Good spot during the week when the place is quiet.

No it's best to take them out the camp ground at the spit is on the other side of the dam wall, there is a camp ground at Kirkliegh but there is bugger all flat ground and the ramp is a dog plus there is not much water front area and what there is is very bony.
